    Cons

    Former Employee - Scientist

    I worked at Sigma-Aldrich full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Hands on experience with the day-to-day manufacturing operation of the company- placing an order for chemicals and equipment, writing the procedure, setting up the process, running the process, work-up, purification, submission to QC, bottling and final submission to Packaging Shipping department while following GDP, GLP, ISO, 5S methodologies ! So essentially a lab person knows the cradle-to-grave process of a product he/she manufactures.

    Cons

No scope of upward growth, especially in smaller sites.
    Employees do not feel valued.
    Poor compensation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of the bureaucracy, be more agile. Value people not numbers. Develop people, give them the tools and resources and then number will come automatically.

    I worked at Sigma-Aldrich full-time

    Pros

Benefit package was decent. Insurance coverage was relatively inexpensive. The 401k had a decent match and defined contribution amount.

    Cons

Pay could have been better considering the chemicals being handled and the large profit margin the company maintains. Difficult to take advantage of tuition reimbursement while working shiftwork. Lack of accountability and a large communication disconnect within shifts and departments. Don't really seem interested in trying to retain quality workers. Large turnover due to lower pay than competition.

I have been working at Sigma-Aldrich full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Opportunity to grow professionally as staffing is lean -- there isn't much training, you need to be comfortable figuring things out yourself.

    Cons

Cost cutting via Global Shared Services (India). The company is extremely concerned about costs and tends to lag on software versions, etc.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Quality matters. Quality costs. Loss of quality isn't overnight but it is felt over time.

    Pros

The culture is pleasant and relaxing to work in.

    Cons

Management lacks communication, direction, follow-through, and lack of accountability. Not much support regarding career advancement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More support of career paths for individuals wanting more advancement out of their career. Need to be much more "forward thinking" and aggressive in their pursuit of excellence at all levels.
