I have been working at Sigma-Aldrich

    Pros

Part of a global corporation, so there are many opportunities to grow
    Decent benefits
Flexible schedule available depending on your job function

    Cons

Because the company is so large, communication is a huge problem. It may take 4-5 emails to get the answer you were looking for. Decisions are made slowly. Overall the company is a big sluggish beast that cares about nothing more than their stock value. This should be nothing new if you've worked in corporate America

I worked at Sigma-Aldrich full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

If you like corporate structure: this is a regulated place with a lot of hierarchical levels.

    Cons

Personal ideas not welcome. Speak if addressed to. People have to watch their backs. Positions were terminated abruptly and no explanation given.

I have been working at Sigma-Aldrich full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

These folks are amazing and long suffering...they work like dogs to achieve impossible goals many of them, so mgmt. level can bonus.

    Cons

The culture used to be embodied in the phrase employees equal stockholders, equal customers. This at least verbalized a balance of sorts. There is no growth, work/ life or implication of balance currently. It's all about the money, no matter the body count.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try caring for your employees instead of squeezing each lemon dry so you can go get a younger, cheaper one. Bring back balance. Think about work life balance and true flex schedules instead of fighting this. and bring back all the jobs sent overseas. Employ more in the US again.

I worked at Sigma-Aldrich full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The coworkers are mostly great. Products are mostly good, if a bit off the current technology.

    Cons

Management decided this year to stop paying promised commissions to sales people. They do not care that income promised is based on commissions. They do not treat employees equally- depending on who you happen to work for you will either love the place or hate it. Important to know for sales people-- they are extremely cheap about expenses and again, depending on your manager, you may have to stay in sketchy hotels when traveling. Finally, even if they tell you they will interview you for a promotion, they probably already have decided who is going to get the job. They may or may not go through the motions of the interview (I was promised an interview and didn't get it).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Sales people are hired with promises for commission if performance is good. You need to keep those promises. Also, if someone is promised an interview for a promotion, you need to keep those promises, too.
