Pros
  • Sikorsky (and UTC) creates a learning culture and puts their money behind it with a very generous Employee Scholar Program (in 20 reviews)

  • I have been told that the Employee Scholar Program and stock award program has been limited lately (in 18 reviews)

Cons
  • Work-life balance: is always on the horizon; there seems an innate inability to eliminate bureaucracy (in 10 reviews)

  • Pay raises are very poor and no adjustment for cost of living (in 7 reviews)

I worked at Sikorsky full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

An excellent company to work for; great benefits…And some great people there…!

    Cons

No room for lateral transfers within the organization…..

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Some middle managers within the (commercial programs) could use some mentoring about taking care of subordinates…

Former Employee - Mechanical Engineer in Stratford, CT

I worked at Sikorsky full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    - Good initial salary and increases/raises are decent.
    - Best vacation/sick time benefits.
    - Secure employment.
    - Coworkers are friendly and nice.
    - Great health insurance.
    - 401K match program is a plus.

    Cons

    - Overtime work is a scam. Receive less than your hourly rate for overtime work if you are a direct employee.
    - Tech support is slow and technology is a bit out of date.
    - Professional development is slow. Hard to get promoted within your own group.
    - End up doing the job of 3 different people due to short staff.
    - A lot of bureaucracy. Engineering work gets muddy in the paperwork chain.
    - A lot of red tape has to be cleared to perform the simplest of tasks.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Improve your technology. Fix how engineering changes get released. Help improve senior engineers response time.
    - Treat professional goals realistically. Create a career plan with your workers.
    - Get more staff for paperwork and analytic studies.
    - Overtime should be at least equal time if not time and a half like other places.

I have been working at Sikorsky full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

The aircraft that Sikorsky produces are technologically cutting edge. Some of the software in use is really advanced as well. There are many opportunities that anyone can see the moment they start. They have insurance and offer time off.

    Cons

Although the products are cutting edge, the processes and procedures are older than time. One of the software suites in use is circa 1995. With all the opportunities available in the company, few (if any) will be obtainable and none can be originated by you. You will quickly see what the personification of stagnation looks like. It is no wonder UTC is trying to get rid of us. As far as the insurance goes, you would be better off saving your money and paying cash. Oh, and all the time off in the world cannot refresh you enough to come back to this dead-end job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make people accountable for their actions. Double standards are everywhere and hurt more than productivity. Pay for salary is inexcusable when the hourly staff they support make twice as much and do little to nothing!

I have been working at Sikorsky full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Pros: Solid benefits, great atmosphere. Incredible people. Great compensation and ability for growth.

    Cons

Uncertainty with Spin Off makes this job unattractive. Helicopter manufacturing takes a long time. Not uncommon to spend your whole career on one project..

I worked at Sikorsky as an intern (more than a year)

    Pros

Well paid interns. Not just errand people. You actually get projects to work on that aid the groups progress.

    Cons

Mainly government contracts so think of that as you will. Nothing wrong with that at the moment.

    Pros

Great manager. A lot of overtime available. Friendly atmosphere. Great opportunities to learn.

    Cons

Bureaucratic. If there is an error with SAP... Get comfortable it's going to be awhile.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make sure mid level management isn't micromanaging their workers. A heads up about when VIP customers are coming through would be nice too.

I worked at Sikorsky as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

coworkers great to work with. very laid back environment, but too laid back. company provided Snap-on tool boxes.

    Cons

where do I start?? everything leads back to management, or the lack of management. disorganized, lack of accountability, lack of direction. management does not care about the employee. simple things like the lack of parking. if you are a contractor, you are less than an employee. S-76 very poor designed aircraft

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

listen to the tech's. management AND engineering. they can help you build the aircraft better and faster.

I have been working at Sikorsky

    Pros

The benefits that come with employment at a UTC company are excellent. 401K match, discounts at major retailers, and excellent insurance options.

    Cons

The slow pace set on the shop floor can drive some people insane while others prefer it. Storms don't usually close the shop unless a State of Emergency is declared by the Governor.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Clean out the bloat. Coatesville hired over 600 people in 2014 and the company slowed down. More errors, more hours on the aircraft, more people complaining they have nothing to do. Have someone walk through the shop on the weekend and see just what is NOT happening.

    Cons

Co-workers are absolutely, miserable and live off of other people's miseries. The work is repetitive and a trained monkey and do it. Worry about layoffs every month. Pay does not equal the stress of people up with coworkers.your just another number there. Would NEVER WORK THERE AGAIN!!!
