I worked at Silicon Graphics International (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The people I worked with were great and in my team, working from home was an option when you needed to be with kids or were out sick.

    Cons

In the time I worked there, I felt like there were layoffs 1-4 times every year. It really didn't help morale to always wonder whether your job was safe. I felt like management wasn't sure which direction to go and was invested in too many different projects.

    Pros

A small company provides you with the ability to work across multiple business groups and meet people through out the company. The company has a clear direction that is discussed openly.

    Cons

Room for growth is limited. You need to take your time in order to establish yourself and your reputation before being able to make an impact.

    Cons

Company is not growing currently, so opportunities for advancement are more difficult.

    Advice to Management

There are a lot of top notch, high quality talented individuals and it can be a great place to till for talent.

    Pros

Great people and technology, company culture used to be a sense of employee community. Employees were proud of the technology and how it was used to help solve some of the world's most challenging problems.

    Cons

Unfortunately with the change of the Executive team within the past 3 years, the company has lost what used to be so special, that "employees were the most important asset to the company," The Execs are concerned about their own financial state, and continue to blame the employees due to the failure of the company's ability to succeed, vs looking at the poor decisions that have made which has cost the company $$$$$$$'s. Company morale is low and a great sense of disengagement from the Exec team.

    Advice to Management

The Board of Directors should be more active in understanding the company's problems, look at the top vs supporting the ongoing jobs that are eliminated to reduce costs.

    Pros

Interesting HPC Solutions to develop with customers....

    Cons

Company is in very dire shape, it was oversold to me....I don't see how they stay in business, pay Sales Reps, Management way to much compensation on such small revenues SCARY!!!

    Advice to Management

Go private or find a buyer for the company or reduce head count even more and force employees to take another pay cut!

    Pros

Used to be a great company in the 90s but continual layoffs may the employee morale in the company very low.

    Cons

Employees are looked at as burdens to the company finances (not for their work function).

    Advice to Management

Be ethical. If you sell a customer a product or support contract, be able to meet those customer obligations.

I have been working at Silicon Graphics International full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The company has been through a lot but seems to be through the worst of it. The people are, by and large, incredibly smart, curious and helpful. Senior management is relatively new and has made a number of good changes over the past few years.

    Cons

Although necessary, the constant sense of cutting has been demoralizing. A lot of good people have left.
