Silicon Image Sys Admin in San Jose, CA:   (Past Employee - 2006)

Pros

Excellent technology - leader in Video Standards and design. Extremely bright engineers, but the Operations side is staffed by incompetents who sometimes don't even know how to use a computer.

Cons

Company is run by short-term focused CEO mainly concerned with building his own wealth. This culture trickles down into management. Upper management disconnected from workers.

Advice to Senior Management

Listen more to engineers and other technical people. Don't commit to projects when you don't know what's invovled. Don't assume things will get done just because you say they should. Less arrogance.

Silicon Image ASIC Design Manager in Sunnyvale, CA:   (Current Employee)

Pros

It has a set of very intelligent and hard working engineers and they do a great job pushing themselves and technology. These same engineers do not plan at all and it is very challenging to get them to plan and do the job they agreed to do.

Cons

These smart engineers do not plan and that comes in the way of execution to plan. Management now is so focussed on execution taht they are not willing to allow evena weeks slip without reacting to the sslip.

Advice to Senior Management

If you want aggressive schedules - one has to at leas be open to the idea of not being able to execute to plan. The only time the teams are able to hit every date on every project is if the team is very conservative and then they hit all the schedules.

By being aggressive and at the same time insisting on on time delivery - teams are being burnt out and they will have atendency to leave.

Silicon Image Director in Sunnyvale, CA:   (Current Employee)

Pros

The best reason to work for Silicon Image is the people up to the middle management level. They work very hard and collaborate well. Teams have a get-it-done attitude. The second reason is that the company has great technology. Not once, but twice, Silicon Image has developed revolutionary technology for display interfaces. DVI was a modest success because of poor marketing of the technology, but HDMI has been a tremendous industry and consumer success. These two things have basically held the company together through its existence. The engineering teams have some great innovators that make it a tremendous place for creative engineers to work.

Cons

Senior management is pretty poor all around. There is no agreement among them on the product direction and strategy for the company. There really need to be some weeding out of the weaker management team members and the non-essential functions that don't contribute to the company's success. The worst part of the company is management of talent. There are so many talented people in Silicon Image that it is amazing at times. Unfortunately, the people that really do the work are not recognized in favor of those that pander to senior management. As a result of this, turnover is very high especially within the most talented middle management. There is almost no chance of advancement in this company, so if you are interested in moving your career forward, don't come to Silicon Image.

Advice to Senior Management

Walk around and see what really goes on in the company, recognize those that do the work and not those perceived to do the work.
