I have been working at Silicon Laboratories full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Top notch design talent. Small design groups with complete ownership of the project from concept to production. Offices! It is so nice to be able to cut down on the hallway distractions.

    Cons

Engineering matrix favors analog engineers and does not match industry. Expect titles to be 1-2 lower than comprable companies. Small design teams means workload is high and lead opportunities go to prior leads

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Align titles to industry standards in order to recruit and retain talent.

I worked at Silicon Laboratories full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Was with the company since IPO and had substantial growth and opportunity. Was great company. Benefits and pay were excellent. People and work environment was great.

    Cons

Only really complaints are the standards for new hires was more along the graduate side instead of the experienced, which meant you were having to do a lot of training and then retraining.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remember what made Silabs so great pre IPO and treat the employees to a little more of that every now and then. Don't be so willing to let long time employees leave for other opportunities.

I have been working at Silicon Laboratories full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The whole company is very focused on creating a good developer experience, providing support to everyone they can realistically manage to fit in (including some direct support from more behind-the-scenes team members who normally wouldn't interact with customers, just to make sure questions are answered well and problems are solved completely).

Everyone in the company up to the CEO is very approachable and will gladly engage in constructive conversation about any business topic. The employees are both professional and courteous, easy to spend time with in the office and out.

Management is very interested in making sure that employees are not overburdened as much as it is within their control. There is a constant effort to implement more efficient systems and improve every aspect of the business such that more can get done in less time. There is never any pressure from superiors to put in extra time on a regular basis. The very few occasions where "burning the midnight oil" is necessary are extremely rare.

The company is more nimble than some people expect due to the high caliber of hardware and software developers, and the fact that all of the hardware and wireless stacks are developed internally. New features and bugfixes (when necessary) can be implemented very quickly.

There is some travel involved for FAEs, but an excessive amount. It's a good balance unless you absolutely can't stand any travel at all (which is not true of me).

Working remotely as an FAE has also worked quite well given the nature of the job. Customer support through the backend systems used can be done effectively and efficiently for a self-motivated employee.

    Cons

Due to the company's focus on excellent customer support and the increasing market for good, full-stack wireless modules, there is sometimes just too much to do in the time available. This is about the best kind of problem to have as a business, if you must have any problems. As a result, there are seasons where particular individuals or teams are stretched pretty thin. As noted in the "Pros" section though, this is not company policy and it is actively addressed as much as possible, sometimes through process improvements and occasionally by hiring more people.

Bluegiga is also a global company, the bulk of which is located just outside of Helsinki. There is a lot of communication that typically needs to happen between various team members, and the time zone difference can be challenging at times. This kind of difficulty is common to any global company though.

    Pros

Great pay, bonuses, and benefits in general. Good people to work with, intelligent, hard-working, nice. Would go back if it made sense.

    Cons

Some politics between various sites, as new companies are purchased around the world.
