I have been working at Silver Valley Unified School District full-time

    Pros

Financially fit and stable, excellent health benefits for certificated staff, smaller class sizes, you won't get pink slipped, worth the drive to the valley locations once you get used to it, this is a district where you have more potential to stay long term and be successful if you choose to.

    Cons

Unless you live in Barstow, prepare for a long commute. People who work at the fort (Ft. Irwin) get burnt out by the long drive. There is a high turn-over at the fort and for admin., there isn't much to do in the area (rural desert). Other teachers at certain schools can be very critical and nosy (at some point you will be talked about behind your back). HR can also be messy and difficult to deal with sometimes.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work on handling concerns/disputes among staff members better. Encourage staff to get along and not gossip; one piece of news spreads like wildfire in a place where everyone knows everyone and their business.

I have been working at Silver Valley Unified School District full-time

    Pros

They are desperate for decent candidates for employment in almost all areas. Far less competition to get hired. Definitely a great place to get your foot in the door and get experience so you can move on to teach and live in a better area. No out of pocket cost towards health benefits for certificated staff. Paid PPO Anthem Blue Cross Insurance $10 co pay can't get any better that that. Paid Dental and Vision too. Good opportunities to take on stipend positions too to make a little extra money. One of the best paying districts in the desert (Victorville pays more). They do hire interns as well because it is so hard for them to keep positions filled.

    Cons

Crummy area, nothing to do, eat lunch at Jack in the Box, Peggy Sue's, Subway, or Burger Den. No local grocery stores. Pretty much have to drive to Barstow for everything. Administration can be a little wacky. Unless you were born in the desert and plan on living your life in the desert, specifically Barstow area, then this isn't a place to stay for more than a couple years or you will risk getting stuck here. Get your experience and move on or buy a plot of land in Newberry and build your dream home and stay until you retire there really isn't much else.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Can't help the location, but do need to work on being even more competitive in pay in order to attract more applicants. Sub situation is also deplorable.

I have been working at Silver Valley Unified School District as a contractor (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Good salary and benefits for teachers. Students know every teacher and teachers know nearly every student (particularly if teaching a core subject).

    Cons

Administration politics can become problematic, though the turnover for principals is high so wait it out.... Also, Barstow CA is not a very convenient place to be. There is not much to do in the way of activities - unless you like dirt biking and shooting, and though it's halfway between the beach and Las Vegas, it's too far from each to really be worthwhile. Also, a high student turnover due to military families makes teaching a bit more challenging sometimes.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The teachers are the front line; support them!
