I have been working at SilverBirch Hotels part-time

    Pros

I have worked in hospitality for many years and this company is by far the best company on so many levels. The company and the managers respect and value their staff. There is room for growth, great insentives and perks. Most everyone there (staff and managers) enjoy their job. A breath of fresh air.

    Cons

    None that are worth mentioning.

I worked at SilverBirch Hotels full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Silverbirch is a growing company that operates a number of sites across Canada. They are reinventing their strategy and culture and doing a great job of it. They are investing wisely in both their property and their people. Employees are treated fairly and equitably. Managers are being grown from within and this is an excellent place to take your career.

    Cons

Currently upgrading sites and renovating which can make things challenging for all. Entry level position are what you would expect in the industry but there is lots of opportunity to grow.

I have been working at SilverBirch Hotels

    Pros

The work atmosphere is one of the best I have experienced in a hotel enviroment, and the management is not only competant, but shows their appreciation for their staff in a number of ways. The human resources department is also fantastic, and there is a lot of communication within the hotel. There is also clear opportunities for advancement within the hotel.

    Cons

As it is a tourist related business, there are down times during the year, at which point there are several layoffs to compensate for the shrinking business. Often there are times where you are reduced to very little hours during the winter time, and it becomes more difficult to apply for Employment insurance because they tend to put you on the schedule for at least one shift a week during the down times. It would be preferable if they offered their 'out of season' guests the same kind of treatment as their 'in season guests'. (Bellman services, front desk staff, etc)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Show a bit more compassion for the employees who get their hours dramtically reduced during the off season and discuss it with them during the first interview, and also before the down times.
