    Negative Outlook

I worked at Silverbrook Research full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Was great in its heyday, with lots of really bright people working on very interesting problems. Was very flexible, with the ability to work from home, and a really good social side.

    Cons

They were lax with paying bills, including salaries and employee travel expenses. Employees shouldn't be left wondering when their next pay check will come in. There was too much chopping and changing, with entire projects killed off as they were approaching completion and too little communication with the employees.

    Advice to Management

Pay your bills, and focus on getting products to market.

  2. Ultimately run by criminals with no regard for their staff

    Negative Outlook

I worked at Silverbrook Research full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

An interesting place to work with some very smart people. Compensation was initially above comparable industry positions. Some enclaves of competence and compassion in a sea of prevaricating incompetence.

    Cons

Once other peoples money has run out, the owners and their malign cronies have acted criminally with complete disregard for their employees who remain without pay. No Human Resource management to speak of, employee development is completely missing. A culture of blame-shifting and avoidance that feeds on itself in a recursive orgy or frustration.

    Advice to Management

Make hard decisions, engage in some business planning. Try not to trade whilst insolvent.

  3. Inventive, Chaotic and exciting

    Pros

Many opportunities for interesting and challenging assignments. A wide variety of scientific disciplines including chemistry, software, colour science, microfluidics, micro-electronics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, etc. Good team culture and nice balance and respect for personal time and commitments. Management very attentive and responsive to personal needs, desires and goals of employees. Company places high priority on disciplined, structured approach to solving problems and documenting progress and discoveries.

    Cons

There is constant, intangible concern about funding. It seems management do not fully communicate where money is coming from and how long it will last. Frequent rumors about funding problems for all research work.
