I worked at Simpson Strong-Tie full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Working here provides above adequate experience in many diverse areas of manufacturing/production, and, higher ups are not just bosses, they're friends, giving above 100% for benefit of employees and themselves. Plant atmosphere is one of quality people sharing the wealth through work, knowledge, and experience, getting down in the trenches with lower workers, willingly providing proficient methods needed to insure employee stability.

    Cons

Longevity in same position, limited opportunity for advancement, but, occasional bonuses, festive activities to demonstrate employer appreciation. Stagnancy of position as plant size is minimal.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Increase potential for growth through plant expansion, creating opportunity for growth from within through placement of experienced personnel in leadership roles to provide potentially beneficial skills to newly hired, adding to workforce in hands-on performance of job responsibilities.

I have been working at Simpson Strong-Tie full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The company has a lot of smart people at the branch level, and employees are given the freedom to do their job, and improve the company.

    Cons

Very little gets accomplished due to a disconnected and out of touch corporate office. The lack of accountability leads to competing agendas at the corporate office. Compensation is well below average.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Clean house in the corporate office, and hire people that will learn how the business really works, and what are customers need.

    Pros

Great company with good people. If working on the wood connector side of the business there is a great wealth of talent. The company takes care of it's people.

    Cons

If you are in the anchor systems BU your are under a different management structure from the core products. The quality of the people is not great and there is a ton of infighting among the management. Most of the managers are people that were not able to advance in the core business.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Roll all divisions under the same structure. Way too much time is spent infighting among redundant managers.

Great benefits, good pay, favoritism, few promotional opportunities

I have been working at Simpson Strong-Tie

    Pros

Casual dress work environment. "Family-style" atmosphere. Overall friendly and pleasant. Most employees have a strong work ethic and show appreciation for the company's generosity and open culture. Most managers are hands-off allowing for independence in judgment in your position, from entry-level to upper-management. Overall, a stable place to work. No annual reviews for exempt positions: feedback is provided continually, which is helpful and refreshing. Profitable. Very good benefits. Benefits used to be better but they have been cut back over the last few years. They are still some of the best benefits and most affordable you would find in your career. Fosters professional development with paid training, conferences, and seminars, and tuition reimbursement. Encourages ideas and innovation. Exceptional incentive and profit sharing programs. Pay is generally competitive. Great place to work while raising a family and developing yourself. If in upper-management, good place to retire from.

    Cons

Little flexibility in scheduling at the McKinney location for both hourly and exempt employees. Other Simpson branches are more flexible with exempt. The use of sick time overall is viewed as a negative. Those who save up hundreds of hours are considered high performers. Each branch has a different feel and culture - no consistency in management - so similar positions company-wide are treated and paid differently. A con of autonomy, which is normally a good thing. Low recognition for exempt employees. Little opportunity for growth due to a slowed economy, but promotional opportunities and "created" positions tend to default to "favorites." Good place to start your career but not end it if you hit a glass ceiling since higher positions do not come available very often. Lots of long-termers sometimes causes stagnation and resistance to change. New ideas sometimes have to come from the outside and are hard to implement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Adopt a culture of consistency with how employees are treated from branch-to-branch, from home office to branch operations, from exempt to hourly. Increase transparency in pay and hiring practices. Implement recognition programs for salaried employees. Provide more opportunities for advancement and cross-functional teams. Avoid using "sick time balances" as a measurement of work ethic and reliability. Broaden HR and Training departments' strategic roles throughout the company. Create strategic partnerships with IT and the following departments: HR, Marketing, Training, and Sales. Get more technologically-savvy for both employees and customers.

I have been working at Simpson Strong-Tie

    Pros

Culture is for the employees. It is the most ethical company I have ever worked with. Great people to work with and for, and have a great plan for the future.

    Cons

Caught up in an industry that most other companies do not take as much care in going the extra mile to provide the best product. Thus the company is often strangled by defending their products againt an inferior less expensive product.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the good work. Try to be more nimble as a company though. It is unfortunate that Simpson must use resources to ensure that other competitors are not at the same level, but it is important to not loose sight of what is important.
