    Pros

Sims Metal is an interesting industry to work in. It's a pretty relaxed work place were jeans and a polo are fine. Have lots of great co-workers that make work fun. Lots of locations across the U.S so the ability to move up is there if you're willing to relocate. Overall work-life balance is pretty good as well and health benefits are very good.

    Cons

You need to be patient as the company tends to take their time when it comes to decisions regarding promotions, pay raises, and annual bonus. When they do finally come through it's not exactly what they originally agreed to.

    Advice to Management

Employees aren't just numbers. Don't expect commitment, hard work, and dedication from employees if you're not going to fulfill promises.

    Pros

Your team of people rather it be scale or outside is what makes the company what it is. That and benefits.

    Cons

Lots of things get swept under rug. Some not fit to manage.

    Advice to Management

REALLY Look at some of your yards and REALLY listen to your guys outside in the yard or scale and see what they want see what you can do to help them rather then take it from a stiff sitting in the office all day.

    Pros

Opportunities to grow in knowledge and skills for those who show initiative. Good benefits. Great management trainee program.

    Cons

Abrupt switch to a "run lean" operating style without the communication and preparation needed to do it well led to problems, including high employee and management turnover. Also, promotion from within not likely for those not initially hired into a managerial track.

    Advice to Management

Place more value on training and quality. You will see production and profit increase.

    Pros

The company recycles metal, glass, plastics and electronics and I felt good working for a company that was making a "green" impact. Last couple of years though management could not keep the business on track. I had autonomy in my position and felt the company did a lot to allow a good life/work balance

    Cons

Nothing over whelming just the inability to weather the downturn to the industry.

  9. Excellent Company

    Pros

Recycling Industry. Promotions within company first. Employee hands on with knowledge of company growth.

    Cons

Have no complaints of company during my 21 years of employment.

    Advice to Management

Upper management was hands on even to the employee level in all departments.

    Pros

Good benefit package, good people to work with

    Cons

Over worked employees for too little money

    Advice to Management

Treat your employees like you value them, and not like they should be thankful to have a job.

    Pros

-Gain work experience in a very unique sector of the metal industry
-Very hands on work with hands off management
    -Independent problem solving

    Cons

-The hourly workers are resistant to change in policies and system changes
-The inventory systems were not well designed to accurately maintain a solids department running constant production processes

    Advice to Management

They need to put the people who not only get things done, but get them done the right way in charge. There are too many people who take detrimental shortcuts.
