SIRIUS XM Here today, gone tomorrow

Intern (Former Employee)
New York, NY

I worked at Sirius Satellite Radio

ProsTo think satellite one would assume that there is a massive team working on this heavily shorted company. There is not, a bare bones staff of boomers and gen X'ers dominate the work environment. Generation Y is slowly making it's way in however assistants and and associates are not being hired and the labor is filled with unpaid interns. One can spend anywhere between thirty to sixty hours in the office. The Senior Managers...they are very protective and do not share success well. You're forced to sign over all intellectual property to the firm in exchange for letters of recommendations future employers will never receive and the Human Resource department will never return calls. Needless to say they needed B+ to A work from me and all I got was this t-shirt.

ConsZero recognition, position isn't specialized. You will be doing a lot of different work in a lot of different fields. Fun and all but you feel like you have to please everyone. But no one cares or thinks about you the moment the internship is over.

Advice to Senior ManagementForget about Howard Stern and all those celebrities. Forget about selling radios...siriusxm is an experience, it is a lifestyle choice it could be revolutionary if the company wanted to be current. Get Mel out too.

Highly disfunctional IT organization

ProsHip media culture
Captive market - only national broadcaster
latent potential to grow due to market positioning and relationships with distribution partners

ConsWeak, whiney senior management team
Inability or unwillingness to invest in operations support infrastructure
IT senior management - an exclusive club of 3 dysfunctional old-school bureaucrats

Advice to Senior ManagementReview the competency of the senior management team (especially SVP and VP titles,) with 360-style performance reviews

Good Salaries, Poor Morale

ProsSalaries are fair to good, as are the benefits. Great opportunity to see, hear and work with very talented artists.

ConsDysfunctional management and internal rivalries turn mid/junior level employees into pawns. No gender or racial diversity in senior management.

Advice to Senior ManagementManagement needs to make themselves aware of accepted workplace culture, and hire more women and minorities in senior positions.

If you start your career here, you MUST leave in order to make more money!

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Sirius Satellite Radio

ProsOnly one reason to work here: the environment. Laid back, flexible, you can be yourself, and those who know how to work the system can get away with murder. One of the top places to work for those who can't live without music.

ConsIf you start at the bottom, you will never, I repeat NEVER, get a decent or fair salary here. A substantial promotion (even moving up a level and to a higher paid department), will result in a miniscule increase in salary, leaving you with more challenging/rewarding work but no real way to make more money in the future. Also, the upper management runs the business very poorly.

Advice to Senior ManagementLearn a thing or two about the public and be smart when presenting your company. For instance, when developing an iPhone app, if you can't get Howard Stern on it, put the project on hold until you can get him on it! Your decisions make it embarrassing to tell people I work here sometimes.

Sirius XM great place to grow, but you have to deal with lower salaries and not that much recognition

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Washington, DC

I worked at Sirius Satellite Radio

ProsGreat place to learn different areas of the business, to be part of a start up (and now the only satellite radio company). Cool people to work with. And nice perks.

ConsYou end up taking on alot of responsibilities, but dont get paid that well. Promotions seem to be not evenly based (you're never sure what you have to do to get promoted).

Advice to Senior ManagementMake the work environment more employee friendly, have team building events or groups. Increase the employee morale. People don't mind working hard and long hours if they feel they are being appreciated.

...and knowing is half the battle

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
New York, NY

I worked at Sirius Satellite Radio

ProsSalary salary salary. Negotiate a big salary and do not expect much else. Occasionally, a musical icon will come into the studio and perform. You do have the ability to wear many different hats and take on as many additional projects as you can handle.

ConsNo marketing strategy. Brand marketing is amateurish. The Director level is overworked and the VP+ levels are incompetent which may work at large institutions making a profit but for Sirius it is a death sentence. You will not be mentored nor encouraged to mentor others.

Advice to Senior ManagementFormulate a strategy and follow it. The merger has taken way too much time and energy from all senior management and has left corporate strategy in complete limbo. Please formulate and elucidate. Without real strategic direction the company can never hope to be anything but reactionary and ultimately a failure.

Some hits, some misses...

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
New York, NY

I worked at Sirius Satellite Radio

ProsThere is still a level of glamour and recognition in working for Sirius.

ConsUpper level management is hit and miss. Some at the director level and above are excellent, others are borderline incompentent. The work/life balance is non-existant for many departments.

Advice to Senior ManagementFocus more on retaining the talent you have and on opening the channels of communication.

Work hard, little pay, no recognition.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Sirius Satellite Radio

ProsYou get to see/meet tons of Celebrities. If you are a Howard Stern fan you can see him (never meet) him walk by and you can interact with other show members. The dress code is very casual so in most departments you can wear jeans everyday.

ConsYou can work very very hard but there may not be any room for growth. If you are lucky enough to get a raise the maximum is usually 10%. 10% of nothing is nothing. If you have an issue the Human Resources department will listen to you, but they are not confidential. They will go back and talk to the others about the issues which will create an uncomfortable work environment.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake a look at your senior management and see that they barely work and get paid at least 300K but the people who slave and work 10 hours a day make 30K.
