I worked at SiriusXM full-time for more than a year

    Pros

It's a virtual smorgasbord of people. You get to meet and socialize with every background and your talents are noticed rather quickly. They offer hot coffee, tea & cocoa all day free for staff. Very relaxed atmosphere.

    Cons

Parking for the staff, the open floor plan, travel between the buildings and building security. Still thought it was too easy for people to get in and wonder around.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I don't really have any comments or advice for upper management. Maybe watch your mid-level managers. Some of them spent too much time with their feet up for the money they made.

I worked at SiriusXM as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

As an intern I had a great mentor, always willing to teach, kept me in the loop, bought me lunch which came in handy since internships are unpaid, I learned so much about the industry and editing audio, the atmosphere was friendly and laid back

    Cons

lots of egos here and "politics", creativity can be somewhat limited, didn't look like there was much room for advancing within the company, people in management roles have been there for 8-10 years and it doesn't look like it's changing any time soon, (not on the creative side anyway...the business side might have more luck)

I worked at SiriusXM full-time for less than a year

    Pros

New Media opportunities in unique music library.

    Cons

Middle management laden and slow to grow. Red-tape nightmare. Unfortunately at the end of the day, SXM is a company that sells car radios, not the Vision Lee Abrams set forth years ago. Could stand to take a page from companies like Apple.

I worked at SiriusXM as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

Fun atmosphere. Professionally-run yet casual environment. Office parties are cool, as is the office itself. A lot of really great people working in production and engineering. Got to see a lot of celebrities and work in-studio. Helped with extremely important production aspects.

    Cons

Talent (hosts) can be like divas. As an intern I worked almost 40 hours a week for 4 months. Didn't even get a thank you from the people I worked with at the end. I felt unappreciated. Oftentimes they didn't call me by name, it was just "intern". My manager would assign me a lot of work even when I was overloaded, and I would sometimes walk in on them watching TV/not doing anything. At points, my manager took credit for things that I had worked on. I wasn't sure what to say/do to remedy the situation. I didn't want to get my producer upset with me, but they were claiming to have done my work. As an intern I felt helpless.

Another con is that the internship's motto is "Get experience, not coffee." I ended up getting a lot of coffee/food. Hardly ever got a "thank you." My second HUGE gripe is that not all programming internships are the same. The only entry level job an intern usually qualifies for is "board operator", but it is EXTREMELY DIFFICULT to learn board operating skills, especially if the show you're working on is run a certain way. At the end of my experience I felt very unqualified for the board operating position, even though I tried my best working an extra hour to two hours each day to learn the board from a random show I had no association with. There were only two open positions for board operators and about 30 interns vying for those spots. It felt extremely unfair. I liked my experience but near the end I grew frustrated. It seemed like the internship wasn't meant to help the interns get jobs. It was free labor for SiriusXM.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There are too many interns and not enough entry level jobs. Some of the internship positions should be jobs so the interns have more opportunities to grow and succeed within your company.
