    I worked at Skadden Arps full-time

    Pros

    Good benefits, pension, vacation.

    Cons

    Horrible and dysfunctional management, demanding attorneys, lay offs and passive aggressive policies.

    Advice to Management

    Send management to sensitivity training and basic management training that isn't all about file building.

    Pros

    Demanding but professional work environment, on the attorney side. Opportunities to work in different practice departments. Opportunity for professional growth if one is willing to step up and accept projects.

    Cons

    HR does not communicate well with support staff, people looking over their shoulders waiting for the axe to fall. Focus is on work, not personal life -- overtime is the norm. Everyone works hard, which is hard on everyone.

    Pros

    Looks great on resume; Good co-workers--attorneys, legal assistants, other staff; Learning opportunities; Competetive salaries and benefits; challenging and interesting cases and tasks.

    Cons

    On call 24/7; No work life balance--time off only approved if you agree to be reachable by phone and blackberry. No opportunities for advancement; Raises and bonuses combined below cost of living increases. No transparency or disclosure between management and staff or management and attorneys.No focus on positive contributions; heavy focus errors or issues--even small items. Favoritism between management and chosen staff. Almost impossible to trust anyone.

    Advice to Management

    Everyone needs some downtime occasionally--a vacation tied to a blackberry is not a vacation. Learn what your staff actually does. Offer positive feedback. Provide support to the support staff: they are providing support to all of the attorneys.
