    Pros

    Great people.
    Great pay.
No micromanagement. You own your work as long as you can handle the load.
Room for growth if you play their ball game.

    Cons

Change is slow to come in a big Firm. Skadden is no exception. A lot of processes would benefit from automation.

    Pros

You get what you put in, occasionally partners may be a bit crazy. Great Pay, management is strong as well. Great HR, salaries, and benefits. Great people to work with.

    Cons

the work is very detail oriented and requires a high level of focus and work ethic

I have been working at Skadden Arps full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Diverse and high profile work, important clients, opportunities to work directly with clients, provides great exit opportunities- people leave to do really interesting things, great facilities and benefits are amazing, good ancillary support for associates (paralegals, word processing, etc).

    Cons

Long brutal hours with really intense expectations in some groups but not dissimilar to any other big firm doing similar work, great work-life balance policies on paper but often poor execution, difficult to make partner, can be very political and little clarity about upward possibilities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make a bigger commitment to work-life balance and you will retain more talented lawyers that also want to have families- the policies are already there but are meaningless unless they are implemented consistently across groups and supported by the partnership.

    Pros

Great environment, fairly casual, lots of very interesting artistic people in this department

    Cons

management can be a bit clueless at times, favoritism is blatant, some partners are tyrants (probably same at most large firms)

I worked at Skadden Arps full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Working as a legal assistant at Skadden is a good job for someone right out of college. Depending on which practice group you land, the work can be engaging, challenging, and even exciting at times. Co-workers are smart, driven people, and the firm's values are on point (provided you have socially liberal leanings).

    Cons

The downside of working at Skadden, as with any Big Law firm, is that it's often a grind. Hours can be long, with lots of nights and some weekends, often with little notice.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do more than pay lip service to work-life balance.

    Pros

Great work, amazing front page deals, cutting edge legal strategies, working with the top in the field

    Cons

Unpredictable hours, some crazy people, partners and senior associates who think yelling is an acceptable form of communication

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide management training and true mentorship to your associates as they come up the ranks and then they won't be such terrible managers

I worked at Skadden Arps full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Among BigLaw peers, better treatment of support staff and opportunities for engaging with the organization.

    Cons

"Better treatment of support staff" is relative and growth opportunities are minimal. Everyone is expected to do their job 120%, but not necessarily given room to go above and beyond your job description and think outside of your role. If you're great at what you do, you're just given more of it instead of being given more responsibility.

    Pros

It looks great on your resume. It becomes a signal to other employer about the caliber of your work and how hard you're capable of working. It's made finding part-time work during law school really easy. It's well paid, especially with the overtime.

    Cons

Long hours, high stress. You'll become more familiar with Seamless takeout than you ever wanted to.
