I have been working at SkillSoft full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

First of all, the culture at Skillsoft is outstanding. Everyone gets along very well across all locations. There is good healthy competition between sales teams that is motivating to management and associates alike. The benefits are outstanding and the executive management really cares about the employees. This is by far the best inside sales position that I have seen in my career with real opportunities to make good money.

    Cons

None that I have seen so far; very pleased with every aspect of the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep doing what you're doing; you are all doing a fantastic job! You have created a great environment here that motivates people to succeed, and the rewards are excellent. Thank you for all that you do!

I have been working at SkillSoft full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Benefits are great! You can make alot of money and the support team is very helpful most of the time. At some point you have to decide if the money is worth selling your sole.

    Cons

Very micro managed, Leadership team tends to bully you to make your numbers. The leadership team is always looking for a new sales strategy, a silver bullet, instead of looking at the core issues in the structure of their solutions and pricing. It is not the sales people you hire that don't get the sales done, it's your own way of all the processes you have. Clients feel they are not partnered with rather everything is about selling them something new so they get an upgrade. . Because you are bullied all the time, it's about what have you done for me today not your history of being a good sales person. A bunch of fakes.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You hire good sales people, trust them more to do what you hired them to do. Take off the hand cuffs. Be more flexible with your clients needs and focus more monies on services for your clients. You are an elearning company that does not practice what you preach. You have no sales training online, no one uses the products sold internally. No career path. Pretty shameful

I have been working at SkillSoft full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The people I worked with in my office were great, the benefits were great, and you were allowed to work at home two days a week. Sick days did not count against your PTO.

    Cons

I had ZERO performance appraisals in six years and two 2% raises in that time while the cost of living in my area went up 15%. The cost of medical insurance went up nearly every year I was there as well. Upper management only concerns itself with the bottom line and doesn't listen to its employees or middle management. There is no incentive to do anything except scrape by. They don't fire under performers and don't promote over achievers

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Performance appraisals, raises , promotions. Ever heard of them? You could stop the turnover if you stopped hiring people making 20k more than the current employees who can't even get a penny of a raise. Time to care about your employees instead of your own pockets.

I have been working at SkillSoft full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Great team of technical staff to work with. Some managers are exceptional.
If you get assigned to the right project, the work can be interesting and technically challenging.

    Cons

Undergoing significant transition in culture due to recent acquisitions. Heavy emphasis on getting something out the door whether it works or not. New engineering management team is heavily into micro-management and focused on the illusion of progress. New employees relegated to fixing defects with limited support, limited documentation, and unfair metrics -- "Fix 2 defects per day or else."

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat your senior technical staff like senior technical staff. Emphasize quality. Provide the junior development staff with the tools they need to succeed.

    I worked at SkillSoft full-time

    Pros

Most field-based sales and services positions work from home. Company is well run operationally. Salaries pretty good. Resources available to help make your job easier. Benefits are good.

    Cons

Poor culture. Employees are not valued for their skills and experience, just warm bodies slotted into positions. Company has been sold twice in the past four years to private equity firms that continue to cut costs to improve returns back to investors in order to sell again. Execs are looking for their final payout.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider employee retention and engagement to be as important as the bottom line. There are significant costs when you need to continue to recruit and train new employees because of so many leaving.

I have been working at SkillSoft full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Great reputation, great people, very flexible culture, most people work at home at least part-time. Excellent benefits.

    Cons

Lots of opportunity for advancement but only if you're willing to take on additional responsibility and workload but not get official promotion or raise...the consequence of a 'flat' culture. Top performers can get burnt out and stunted.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get a talent management and employee L&D strategy in place to develop internally and retain high performers, beyond just sales financial incentives. Eat your own dog food, or the top dogs will find their meals elsewhere!
