GREAT benefits, but not without a downside

    Cross-Utilized Agent (Former Employee)
    Grand Junction, CO

ProsAwesome coworkers, pay raises every year (twice in the first year after 6 and 12 months), effective training, and the benefits!

ConsManagement is understanding, but not effective; too little pay for the work, and the benefits don't completely justify the low pay.

Advice to Senior ManagementManagement needs to be more proactive to increase efficiency. Management is too held up in offices to be aware of what goes on without radio communications.

Was great with part-time, now it's hard to have a life outside work

    Flight Attendant (Current Employee)
    Salt Lake City, UT

ProsFlight benefits are great if you can get the time off to use them. Management really doesn't stick their nose into your day-to-day flying operations so you are pretty autonomous.

On low-flying-volume months you can have 15+ days off each month without having to use up your vacation hours.

ConsSeniority is EVERYTHING! Unless you are willing to relocate to a domicile that is EXTREMELY junior, you will be stuck with bottom-of-the-barrel flying for the first 3-4 years. And even then you will probably have crappy flying for 3-4 months (summer months) every year. So, don't plan on having a life during these high-flying months. You will likely be stuck flying 18-20 days each month during the high-flying season.

Don't expect to make any decent money unless you plan on working (a.k.a. being away from home) 4-6 days a week.

Advice to Senior ManagementHire QUALIFIED people for management positions. And in order to actually get QUALIFIED applicants you need to offer a decent wage to make it worth their time.

Help your employees have a strong work/life balance and your employees will be more willing to help the company when times get tough.

    Not too shabby

    Aircraft Maintenance Technician (Current Employee)
    Salt Lake City, UT

ProsNot a bad stepping stone into the aviation industry. It's a non-union company that offers its employees flight benefits with partner airlines so its great for anyone that loves to travel. Performance bonuses are given each quarter. Great people to work with. Three day weekends every week.

ConsPolitics here and there but that's just expected. Pay could be higher but lots of overtime is available. Small pay raises once a year but very job stable.

    Regional airlines...

    Flight Attendant (Current Employee)
    Salt Lake City, UT

ProsSkywest sells block time, not tickets, to United, Delta, Alaska, American, and USair. We are a cheaper alternative to mainline and as such, everyone does multiple jobs.
After every flight you'll find flight attendants crossing seatbelts, taking out the trash, and cleaning the toliets.
We're an industrious group, full of great people who love flying out west.
On top of that, there is a general feeling that upper management really cares.

ConsMiddle management doesn't seem to care.
Expected to take on an ever increasing workload.
Part time employment for Inflight was taken away, without a vote from flight attendants.
United is a frustrating partner to fly for.

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease get United to give us blankets on the flights. And lemons/limes/milk. And an adequate number of snack boxes.

It feels like being part of a family.

    Contract Area Manager (Former Employee)

ProsThe people are great to work with and the flight benefits make up for the lack in salary.
They tend to promote from within.

ConsReorganizing departments not always handled professionally

    Dedicated and Loyal employee group

    Station Agent (Former Employee)

ProsFlight Benefits on Skywest and many other air carriers. Average health benefits. 401k and profit sharing programs. Diverse employee group that form lasting friendships.

ConsCan be high stress when flights are full or overbooked. Companys policy of doing more with less many times translates into poor customer service. Payscale is at the low end of the spectrum in relation to the work load.

High expectations from low quality management team. Negative work environment.

    Mechanic Apprentice (Former Employee)
    Denver, CO

ProsFlexibility to handle your work load as you see fit. Good schedule; four consecutive ten hour days a week. Travel benefits are okay if you don't mind getting bumped off of flights constantly. Opportunity to learn automotive systems is there, if you take initiative. Lots of time driving in climate controlled trucks.

ConsManagement likes to tell you your are not working hard enough despite the fact that you are rarely supervised, and they sit on the ramp fiddling with their cell phones on a regular basis.
Not an apprenticeship. You are mostly a tire changer and tow truck driver. Most people out on the ramp are in a bad mood. Also, supervisors do pick favorites.

Advice to Senior ManagementBefore critiquing the apprentices, talk to them and see whats really going on on the ramp, and listen. Better yet, try supervising. If you want to keep them employed with you, show some appreciation or raise the pay scale. A little positive feed back never hurt anyone. Also stop picking favorites, keep it professional.

Skywest is terrible to employees and customers

    Cross-Utilized Agent (Former Employee)
    Bozeman, MT

ProsFlight benefits on Skywest, good co-workers although they don't last.

ConsPay and respect. Skywest does not value their employees or customers. Constant turnover.

Advice to Senior ManagementTreat your employees with a little more respect. Getting a paycuts when you make $9/hour, springing mandatory hours with no notice. That is just mean.
