    Awesome new management

    Software Development Engineer (Current Employee)
    London, England (UK)

Pros- New management (Gurdeep Pall is effectively ceo) seems to have great vision & technical chops
    - great spot for a developer focused on mobile

    Cons- Losing share to Whatsapp.
    - new Microsoft leadership untested.

Microsoft have killed all that was good

    Project Manager (Former Employee)
    London, England (UK)

ProsNothing anymore, just another Microsoft division with lots of meetings and slow process
Only good thing left were odd pockets of old skypers.

    ConsPolitics
    Meetings
Constant late night calls to Redmond
TERRIBLE middle management (All have come from Redmond)

    Great conditions, slow pace

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    London, England (UK)

ProsGreat company to work at, good benefits etc. Working to further a global brand which people value (even if mainly for the freemium product) is satisfying. Genuine attempts continuously made to improve the way the company works, which have had some impact.

ConsSince 2009, company's owners gave up on the goal of releasing new innovative products to focus on financials. Plenty of scope for work, but not as interesting as many other companies in the space today.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop the archaic central planning/oversight of product teams

ProsSome great people, freedom to make a difference, many things to work on.

ConsCrazy crazy management. Cultural differences with Microsoft.

Start-up days are culturally long gone, but still a great company

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    London, England (UK)

ProsInteresting technology, product that people don't just use but actually appreciate and are thankful for, reasonable level of flexibility in work arrangements

ConsA lot of development sites for a relatively small company leading to inevitable miscommunication or lack of communication or infighting

Great place to work, nice people and lots of challenges included

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    London, England (UK)

ProsSkype is a great product and it is exciting to be able to shape a product that millions of people all over the world use every day to stay in touch and communicate. It is a challenge to have such wide variety of users, both in terms of their communication needs and their cultural background.
The working environment is relaxed and informal and it's possible to work remotely if it's necessary. Colleagues are smart and nice and it's fun to work with people from many different countries. The office has a really nice cafeteria / chill-out area with a kitchen and comfy sofas.

ConsAs the company is still young and growing fast at the same time, the processes in place are not sometimes not ideal and it can be frustrating when things keep changing throughout a project.
But at the same time that's a challenge as there is still room to improve how we work.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep working on improving our internal processes to develop and deliver a great product for our users.

A little chaotic but a great company

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    London, England (UK)

ProsSkype has excellent brand recognition. It is a product and company that brings families together and levels the playing field for small businesses. It is great to be part of that. Plus, there are some really sharp people in the company.

ConsThe company is still trying to figure out how to make larger gross margins which leads to a lot of re-organizing and changing of direction. Also the world is moving to applications delivered through the cloud. Skype may need to figure out how to participate in that trend as well.

Advice to Senior ManagementThink about promoting from within and training your current staff more.

Henry doesn't lead Skype - Josh Silverman does.

    Project Manager (Current Employee)
    London, England (UK)

ProsFlexible working hours, ability to work from home (WFH), travel opportunity between London, Prague, Stockholm, San Jose, Tallinn, work with the greatest minds in software in europe, great public perception. Work with some of the greatest tech companies out there as partners. Freedom to innovate. Choice of Mac or PC laptops, free unlimtied worldwide calls, really good benefits. Backing of a large company (and hence good share options)

ConsVery little experience with real customers, young company (in experienced), wrong people in the wrong positions (as it's a young company), very little processes, offices in seperate countries/cities makes life difficult sometimes.

Advice to Senior ManagementInstall some senior management with some real experience. Don't be afraid to do away with the old to install someone with experience

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend
