I worked at Skype full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Nothing anymore, just another Microsoft division with lots of meetings and slow process
Only good thing left were odd pockets of old skypers.

    Cons

    Politics
    Meetings
Constant late night calls to Redmond
TERRIBLE middle management (All have come from Redmond)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Let Skype be Skype again, distributive and quick to react else it will be dead

    I worked at Skype full-time

    Pros

Great company to work at, good benefits etc. Working to further a global brand which people value (even if mainly for the freemium product) is satisfying. Genuine attempts continuously made to improve the way the company works, which have had some impact.

    Cons

Since 2009, company's owners gave up on the goal of releasing new innovative products to focus on financials. Plenty of scope for work, but not as interesting as many other companies in the space today.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop the archaic central planning/oversight of product teams

I have been working at Skype

    Pros

Interesting technology, product that people don't just use but actually appreciate and are thankful for, reasonable level of flexibility in work arrangements

    Cons

A lot of development sites for a relatively small company leading to inevitable miscommunication or lack of communication or infighting

I have been working at Skype

    Pros

Skype is a great product and it is exciting to be able to shape a product that millions of people all over the world use every day to stay in touch and communicate. It is a challenge to have such wide variety of users, both in terms of their communication needs and their cultural background.
The working environment is relaxed and informal and it's possible to work remotely if it's necessary. Colleagues are smart and nice and it's fun to work with people from many different countries. The office has a really nice cafeteria / chill-out area with a kitchen and comfy sofas.

    Cons

As the company is still young and growing fast at the same time, the processes in place are not sometimes not ideal and it can be frustrating when things keep changing throughout a project.
But at the same time that's a challenge as there is still room to improve how we work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep working on improving our internal processes to develop and deliver a great product for our users.

    I worked at Skype

    Pros

Skype has excellent brand recognition. It is a product and company that brings families together and levels the playing field for small businesses. It is great to be part of that. Plus, there are some really sharp people in the company.

    Cons

The company is still trying to figure out how to make larger gross margins which leads to a lot of re-organizing and changing of direction. Also the world is moving to applications delivered through the cloud. Skype may need to figure out how to participate in that trend as well.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Think about promoting from within and training your current staff more.
