Good Job at a Good Company

I have been working at Skyworks Solutions full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Large company with a lot of resources and established processes (can also be a con), makes for a relatively straightforward transition from school. Lots of highly experienced employees. Very solid pay + benefits (including stock options and grants at entry level). Design, manufacturing, testing, FA and customer support are all done on site (at least at Newbury Park) so you can be exposed to all sides of the business.

    Cons

Large company with established procedures, so some positions can be repetitive. There is some tension between different departments that can hamper progress due to finger pointing and posturing. Many people do work long hours, although it varies a lot by position

I worked at Skyworks Solutions full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Good people, decent compensation. Company has plenty of resources both financial and human and aims to be a force in the market. Work life balance is reasonable and culture is generally positive.

    Cons

New leadership is brutal and will slash jobs even when the people and the company are doing great. Anything to improve the bottom line. During my time there we experienced several job actions a year - even business units that were doing a great job for the company and key performers were shown the door based on the whims of executive management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Your aggressiveness in axing jobs (even in good times and with good performers) will kill the company. Show some loyalty to the people who put you where you are. Dave Aldrich is a good guy, but his successor (Liam Griffin) is a ruthless tyrant who axe anyone that isn't his buddy.

    Political, non-technical maangement

    I worked at Skyworks Solutions

    Pros

Their supply chain and customer relationships are the best in the industry. Depending on your position and role, you get good exposure to Tier 1 customers/partners, as well as state-of-the-art supply chain and vendor capabilities. Stock has done well. If you just want to do your job, take your paycheck and not be too motivated to make a difference, this is a good place.

    Cons

It's like a shark tank - heavy politics and finger pointing on lower management by upper management. The culture is evident as all senior management positions are held by sales/marketing professionals with no technical experience or exposure. They have a tendency to block strong technical folks from going up the ladder. The company is always chasing sockets and is never the first one as minimal resources are invested in technology/research. It's all about pleasing the Wall Street. If you lack technical prowess, have done well in a highly political organization, and love your old school 8 - 5 office hours, this is the place to be. Flexible schedules are frowned upon.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest more in R&D, make your engineering feel more valued than your sales/operations/marketing, after all they design what you sell or market and is the most difficult talent to come by.

I have been working at Skyworks Solutions full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Growing industry recognition. Understands the needs of the customer. Great investment opportunity.

    Cons

Non-existent training for new engineering hires. Design work equates to copy and paste in order to yield lowest risk outcome. Don't expect to do anything new until you reach director level status. The unrealistic schedules only stress people out and result in disappointment. There is very little incentive to stay should a better opportunity come along.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't hire new people if you're going to treat them as a threat to your schedule. Stop sending the "you don't matter" message every time your new hire asks a question, we're all playing for the same team. Assign mentors who actually have the time and desire to mentor.

I have been working at Skyworks Solutions full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

People are knowledgeable and helpful. Salary is competitive.

    Cons

Too many chiefs and not enough indians to do the work. Work load is ridiculous and even if you get it all done, ontime, your manager gets rewarded. No goals as the mgmt changed so many times. Too political, with all mgrs trying look better than other.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take the time to get to know what people are doing rather than have expectations without sharing what they are. Mgmt needs to see that the company is growing quickly and cannot be ran like it is just in one site. Every site works in a silo with nothing standardized. Need to look at big picture not just what is happening in any one of the sites.

I have been working at Skyworks Solutions full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Leadership is top notch and hire only the most qualified people. Most of the employees are honest, hardworking individuals who are paid well for the work they do.

    Cons

They have quietly made a name for themselves in the industry. So it is hard to advance because of the talent pool of interested candidates.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Pros

Great stock options, lot of future for the company, managers do very well.

    Cons

Low salaries for non-managers. In Woburn average age is 55, it seems that promotions are given to Manager's friends.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire the best people because of their skills not because they are your friends. Perks are good, keep it up!
