I have been working at Sleep Train Mattress Centers full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - great people work here - you have some control over your income - lots of downtime for personal interests - decent benefits

    Cons

    - long, ridiculous hours - since being purchased by Mattress Firm, there has been little to no communication between sales and management - probation programs for performance are strict and many great salespeople lose their jobs regularly; no loyalty from the company

    Advice to Management

communicate more with people and have some interest in the people that work under you as people, not just as employees. listen to the concerns that your people have and work on finding long-term solutions. stop firing good salespeople because of a few bad months, most often due to circumstances beyond their control

I worked at Sleep Train Mattress Centers full-time

    Pros

A place to work, clean and presentable workplace (usually).

    Cons

Too many hours, flooded sales floor.

    Advice to Management

Happy Salespeople make money and continue to sell. A flooded floor leads to unhappy salespeople.

I worked at Sleep Train Mattress Centers full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Really good pay and excellent training. Sometimes you get three days off.

    Cons

Management was kind of a joke. Nobody in their corporate level had a degree so they lacked some business acumen.

    Advice to Management

Be more fair and expect less. Lead by example and let go of your fear tactics. Earn more credibility.

I have been working at Sleep Train Mattress Centers full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

If you are in a big enough store (staff-wise), then you can balance work/life a little better..that's a stretch though.

    Cons

Sleep Train was bought by Mattress Firm and it went downhill from there. The company lost it's identity and now are flooding markets with stores that take away customers from nearby stores. Pay needs to be restructured to reflect these changes as employees are looking for work elsewhere now. You work long hours and on some days make no money as the company is 100% commission based.

    Advice to Management

Work on retaining your staff instead of using corporate lingo to justify reduction in pay to employees when opening numerous stores

I worked at Sleep Train Mattress Centers (More than a year)

    Pros

Open door to upper management, in depth quality sales training, good pay

    Cons

Its sales so all the draw backs that go with performance based sales jobs, sales goals, margins, etc. Upward mobility is somewhat limited

    Advice to Management

Doing a great job, maybe just add some regional sales coaches instead utilizing existing trainers.

I have been working at Sleep Train Mattress Centers full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Nice people in stores to work with.

    Cons

This company has been going downhill fast. It is no longer employee owned. They have taken away the esop, the bonus rewards program and have gotten very cheap. They used to have exciting prizes and would come buy you lunch if you were doing well. Management does not care anymore and the sales goals have become punitive so that they don't have to pay bonuses anymore. They also have an awful charge back of 150% when a customer returns a bed to the store so you lose more money in commission then you earned originally selling it. It is getting worse everyday and they are not doing anything to make employees want to do well other then avoid getting fired.

    Advice to Management

Pay your people and stop dumping higher and higher goals on your sales people. People are giving up because things have become unrealistic.

I worked at Sleep Train Mattress Centers full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good commission structure, Great discounts, superb training department. You will succeed if you want to.

    Cons

Transfer stores a lot. Uncertain of where your next store might be and that will directly afferct your paycheck. So just be good at your job and youre fine.

    Advice to Management

Keep looking for ways to make sleep train grow. Stay with the family environment and brotherly love after the mattress firm buyout. Dont sellout ;)

I have been working at Sleep Train Mattress Centers full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    good employee discount for mattresses

    Cons

long hours. no overtime pay even though you always work more than 8 hours and always more than 40 hours in a week. it is modern day slavery. no work and life balance at all. only way to move up is if you a related to management. special treatment if you have the right last name. everyone else get treated like dirt. no breaks, no lunch, can't leave store. seems like they are breaking labor laws but it is to expensive to hire a lawyer.

    Advice to Management

maybe you believe all the great things you say about the company but you would be better off if you quit putting on a sales job about how good everything is. IT IS NOT. this company has slowly turned into just another retail slave operation that does not value workers in any way and all you can do is keep talking about how great everything is. please wake up and smell the coffee. it was pretty good when I started with employee owned and better service for customers. now it is really bad.
