I have been working at Sling Media full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    1. Cool technology/great product
    2. Flexible work hours and good work/life balance
    3. Really nice coworkers

    Cons

    1. Parent company that is culturally the total opposite of Sling
    2. Average benefits package

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

We need better communication with the Bangalore office - and we need to hire or train employees on project management skills to avoid production problems.
Also need to make sure the benefits are equal to other companies

I have been working at Sling Media full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Cool, innovative, bleeding edge products. Always something new and a deep pipeline filled with lots of exciting technologies. Lots of opportunities for personal growth, if one seizes them.

    Cons

Sometimes trying to run faster than the company has the resources to support. Business environment is dynamic and industry is constantly shifting, requiring quick thinking and change in directions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Stay focussed.

I worked at Sling Media full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    complex and pretty interesting technology
some good people to work with

    Cons

All the negatives of a large company in a small package
terrible benefits (worst I have ever heard of)
    Below average pay; no bonuses
High degree of politics and favoritism from Sr Staff for such a small company
    high and frequent turn over
non-existant team building with lack of company sponsored events
    lack of any culture

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

lack of clear direction from Sr. staff. Throwing darts mentality will only carry you for so long.

I worked at Sling Media full-time

    Pros

Nice and easy culture. A great place for work/life balance (or work and 2nd work balance). Work from home policy is pretty relaxed.
If you are in company's inner circle, you do not need to show up at work. Even you can combine a vacation with a not-so-needed business trip, and have most of your expenses paid.

    Cons

Company is struggling to reinvent itself. No bright product roadmap. Keeps recycling the old technology and getting same poor results.
Favoritism is pretty obvious. VPs see the rest of employees as dumb and disposable workers. VPs do not value ideas that are not theirs. Salary and benefits below the market rate even for interns.
Sling executives are great individual contributors, but have absolutely no management skills. They struggle giving directions to their own first level of direct reports - let alone leading a company.

I worked at Sling Media full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Wonderful to work in consumer electronics. The concept itself for the product and technology is great, but it's not marketed with any effort. Compensation is decent.

    Cons

Management does not know how to lead. Direction of the company is always uncertain. Evident executive team shows favoritism. Poor communication between departments.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Opportunity for this company to grow and perform well has passed you by. You no longer have a hold on the marketplace for this technology. You need to listen to your people and value their opinions. Provide an opportunity for personal growth and development.

    Pros

Good middle management, cool technology, Flexible schedule, nice people. Great chance for new people to learn and grow.

    Cons

Owned by Echostar, which has notoriously cheap management / policies. Will try to nickel and dime you on everything.
IT is continually overworked and understaffed.

I worked at Sling Media full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

No layoffs, job stability and a steady paycheck from the parent company Echostar

Nice people and an easy going atmosphere with no pressure to deliver unless you take the onus upon yourself

Cool gadgets and technologies that you can work on and put on your resume

    Cons

Awful Echostar health benefits plan especially for people with families. The smarter employees jump onto their spouse's health plan if they can.

Salaries are stagnant and very non-competitive with the rest of the bay area. No annual bonus and a few lucky people get a paltry salary increment that is barely enough to cover inflation.

Employees are constantly leaving because of lackluster top management that seems to promote yes-men or hires from outside the company. The people who actually contribute and innovate are left with no choice but to leave this company in frustration.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management seriously needs to improve employee compensation to retain talent.

Reward top performers otherwise it breeds an atmosphere of frustration and envy.
