    Pros

    complex and pretty interesting technology
some good people to work with

    Cons

All the negatives of a large company in a small package
terrible benefits (worst I have ever heard of)
    Below average pay; no bonuses
High degree of politics and favoritism from Sr Staff for such a small company
    high and frequent turn over
non-existant team building with lack of company sponsored events
    lack of any culture

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

lack of clear direction from Sr. staff. Throwing darts mentality will only carry you for so long.

    Pros

Nice and easy culture. A great place for work/life balance (or work and 2nd work balance). Work from home policy is pretty relaxed.
If you are in company's inner circle, you do not need to show up at work. Even you can combine a vacation with a not-so-needed business trip, and have most of your expenses paid.

    Cons

Company is struggling to reinvent itself. No bright product roadmap. Keeps recycling the old technology and getting same poor results.
Favoritism is pretty obvious. VPs see the rest of employees as dumb and disposable workers. VPs do not value ideas that are not theirs. Salary and benefits below the market rate even for interns.
Sling executives are great individual contributors, but have absolutely no management skills. They struggle giving directions to their own first level of direct reports - let alone leading a company.

    Pros

Wonderful to work in consumer electronics. The concept itself for the product and technology is great, but it's not marketed with any effort. Compensation is decent.

    Cons

Management does not know how to lead. Direction of the company is always uncertain. Evident executive team shows favoritism. Poor communication between departments.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Opportunity for this company to grow and perform well has passed you by. You no longer have a hold on the marketplace for this technology. You need to listen to your people and value their opinions. Provide an opportunity for personal growth and development.

    Pros

Good middle management, cool technology, Flexible schedule, nice people. Great chance for new people to learn and grow.

    Cons

Owned by Echostar, which has notoriously cheap management / policies. Will try to nickel and dime you on everything.
IT is continually overworked and understaffed.

Former Employee - Software Engineer in Foster City, CA

    Pros

No layoffs, job stability and a steady paycheck from the parent company Echostar

Nice people and an easy going atmosphere with no pressure to deliver unless you take the onus upon yourself

Cool gadgets and technologies that you can work on and put on your resume

    Cons

Awful Echostar health benefits plan especially for people with families. The smarter employees jump onto their spouse's health plan if they can.

Salaries are stagnant and very non-competitive with the rest of the bay area. No annual bonus and a few lucky people get a paltry salary increment that is barely enough to cover inflation.

Employees are constantly leaving because of lackluster top management that seems to promote yes-men or hires from outside the company. The people who actually contribute and innovate are left with no choice but to leave this company in frustration.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management seriously needs to improve employee compensation to retain talent.

Reward top performers otherwise it breeds an atmosphere of frustration and envy.

Nice people, interesting products, noncompetitive salary, terrible benefits, stubborn and tightwad parent company

Current Employee - Anonymous Employee in Foster City, CA

    Pros

    Nice people to work with
Stress level is good, as is work-life balance
    Good work environment
    Cool products

    Cons

Salaries are so bad that the company is losing 4-6 people per month, and can't easily replace them.
2% "merit increases" ... for everyone ... and that's IF you outperform.
    No bonuses or stock options.
$1,250 deductable, insulting "Consumer Choice!!" insurance plan (with 20% copay for EVERYTHING after that) is your ONLY option.
Bad compensation is starting to affect the quality of the staff ... Sling Media is going from smart and quick-moving to slow, mediocre, "it's not my job." You get what you pay for.
    Disorganized product releases, inadequate QA.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find a way to get Echostar leadership to understand that the compensation problem at Sling is an emergency that is killing Sling's ability to compete for good people in the Silicon Valley. And good luck with that. More effective QA.

Current Employee - Beta Program Manager in Foster City, CA

    Pros

Great place for learning the industry and watching a company grown from a startup to a big, fat slow corporate entity.

    Cons

Instead of doing things right and making sure product works engineering is forced to rush and strive for dates and features. Needs more attention to product testing and validation to ensure quality product and experience.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Accountability and Structure are needed.
