    very straight forward job
willing to train you in different departments if you ask a supervisor
the company is pretty flexible when it comes to giving shifts that work with your schedule

    Cons

pay is not that great for all the work that must be done
    can become very tedious
some customers can become easily irritated but that goes with any job involving customers

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

bump up the pay of your cashiers as they are expected to do a lot.

I have been working at Smart & Final part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    Employee discount
    Cheap food
    Nice co workers
If the manager likes you, you will get hours.
    Great if you in school.

    Cons

They will hire you as a full timer but you will only get scheduled for part timer. Only work 4 hour sifts. No full 8 hour shifts. Favoritism is key at smart and final. They like you to kiss there butt. You can be hard working but will not get noticed. Expects you to do a lot for little pay. Not good with raises. If your lucky once a year. They don't appreciate hard work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get to know your employees better on a work to work bases instead of a personal bases. Managers showing favoritism to other employees based off of personal reason. Better workers better customer service. Overall the store will run better.

I have been working at Smart & Final part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The pay is pretty good in the long run. Company is growing with lots of new stores building and lots of remodels taking place. That means there is a lot of room for growth. Raises every certain number of hour. Managers can work with your schedule.

    Cons

Compensation for part time associates is not that great. The longer you are with the company the better your pay will get.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make your employees feel like they are appreciated! This leads to employees that will get the job done for you.

    Pros

If you work hard, your managers will see it. If you want to move up, let people know, and they'll make it happen. I personally love my job. It's like a Smart & Final family at my store. However, it's rare to ever have a rude manager. Three out of four managers are the nicest people I've ever met. I hope to further my career here at Smart & Final.

    Cons

There are no cons for this company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

To smaller store managers, take a break, you guys work too much.

I have been working at Smart & Final full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Company is continuing to build new stores year to year, lots of job opportunity. Variety of things to do all day. Opportunities for advancement will only continue to grow.

    Cons

Labor always tight, so you may be on register one moment then cleaning bathrooms next.. Sometimes there is to much pressure when trying to complete a task when you are running all over the place.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Instead of "Spotlight" show your thanks with gift cards. Takes to long on spotlight to gather enough points to get a 5.00 Starbucks card!!

Former Employee - Grocery Store Manager

I worked at Smart & Final full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Ability to work your way up rapidly with plenty of hands on opportunities and areas to train and develop associates and interact closely with customers and vendors.

    Cons

The mostly hourly job duties that comprise the mgmt position grew daily for mgmt while payroll shrunk making customer service a daily challenge as well as maintaining store standards.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work in the stores again if possible - at least for a week to reconnect with the daily challenges your store mgmt team faces and try to create a more even balance between additional workload, store conditions, budgetary issues and of course customer service.
