I have been working at Smart & Final part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Co-workers were great. I was able to work with my schedule with school and being my first job it was ok.

    Cons

Pay was ok but raises were hard to get. More on how many hours a year vs how long you worked there. Management was ok at first but later on the I noticed things were the company tired to implement new things and I would be told one thing and the next day would be told another. This got better when I left but it was hard to follow who was right.

I have been working at Smart & Final full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Great place for people with retail grocery backgrounds to get back on track, because they are looking for candidates that have a strong grocery store bcakground.

    Cons

They run a very tight labor budget so don't work there thinking that you can just deligate job duties, everybody is running around trying to get the job done. Its a very tough place to work in when it gets really busy, its not staffed like a real grocery store so beware.

I have been working at Smart & Final part-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

They work with your Schedule if your in school

    Cons

Favoritism is real. if you kiss but and are liked by your manager you will move up fast. However, if your manager doesn't like you, a transfer is in your future. The company really doesn't give a crap about there employees even though they act like they do

I have been working at Smart & Final full-time for more than a year

    Pros

-The managers were very understanding of their employees
-When good work was done you were praised, which is key to success in a company
-The hiring and training process was very simple and detailed
-Working as a team was a very big deal, so if you can't do that you might as well quit
-The work was quick paced and days went by really fast
-If you treated your customers right they treated you with loads of respect and appreciation

    Cons

-It took a while for specific people to get moved up to a higher position (there was a lot of favoritism)
-Key carriers thought they were the hottest thing around town, in other words they were very cocky
-The service clerks were taken advantage of, too much work was on their hands while other people had simple tasks

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

-Treat each and every one of your employees with respect and equality
-Don't focus too much on the ones with keys, they tend to become very arrogant because of that
-The store detail should something to be more concerned about, customers pay attention to organization

    Pros

I have nothing good to say about my experience working at this company

    Cons

I was never able to get a break, we were never compensated for our trips to other stores, there were constant changes in upper management whom the majority were poor managers.

I have been working at Smart & Final part-time for more than a year

    Pros

There is a lot of room for growth with the company. Flexible hours and you can work at any Smart and Final to pick up more shifts if you want. If you work HARD and FAST you will be treated like gold. Our customers are wonderful and most of them will treat you very well. Shifts go by very fast because you are working very quickly. It is never a dull moment.

    Cons

When it is a slow season there are NO hours I got 8 hrs. a week a few times. Managers show favoritism all the way to the top. You will move up quicker if you have a friend or family member who works for the company if not you are stuck with the crappy jobs and crappy hours. The pay is very low for the work you are expected to do. Management does not communicate with each other very well. One manager will tell you to do something a certain way and another will be angry with you for doing it that way.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communicate with each other. Promote people who put in the work not people who have a family member in management. Don't forget the climb to the top, each of your associates is in a position you were once in and if you think about how hard it was to be a service clerk, or cashier you will better appreciate the work they do for you now.

I have been working at Smart & Final part-time for more than a year

    Pros

-Some managers are better than others (will give promotions/raises).
-After so long, you get several hours of paid sick leave
-There are discounts through this employer for items like cell phone services
-They have an OK rated 401k plan according to analysis
-From what I hear, they do offer decent medical and dental insurance

    Cons

-They seem to pay less for the same exact job at competing stores
-Raises are hard to come by
-Employees (often younger) are making minimum wage after working for years while the older staff make $20+ an hour
-Some managers hire outside of the company for higher up jobs, even if they already have people trained to do them in their own store

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

When promoting people, there needs to be adequate training. Even for smaller jobs, you are often trained but just "thrown in" without enough knowledge. There needs to be more promoting from within the company (and preferably the same store) if the employees are fit for the job. I recommend all managers should be tested for knowledge of company policy and steps to do lower-level jobs at least once a year. Too many managers have no idea what they are doing and don't have a defined outline for each job.

If you want to retain talent that could be promoted in the future, you need to start them off at a higher pay and let your employees know they are valued. Companies competing with Smart & Final have better pay and customer service.

My final thought is to corporate: It's OK to want to grow a business, but you are too optimistic in your profit projections and expectations.

I have been working at Smart & Final part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The employee and customer are nice and so are the senior manager and assistant manager to.

    Cons

The training is not that great here and they play favoritism. And it takes a long time to move up in the company

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you want your employees to run a department at list give them proper training to do the job right.
