    Pros

Smart people, work hard, good customers. Everyone trying hard but managers are not trained and don't know how to lead. The customers want the company to succeed, but the sales people only know how to sell the email.

    Cons

Executive management is new to the industry and keeps changing direction. Lack of consistent communication and CEO enjoys making offhanded insults at employee meetings.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fix the product, train the managers and communicate a plan.

    Pros

None, really. Except being a bit lenient on days off and working from home...

Also, the benefits are not bad. 401k and health. Previously, their bonuses/commissions were good but recently this has changed and they took forever to tell employees about the new plans.

    Cons

Management is terrible. Company is way too focused on sales. Clients are unhappy due to the lack of help from support and account managers are only focused on renewing clients - not keeping them happy.

Barely any real training for employees. The product is terrible and has many flaws that no one wants to fix because they only want to focus on new features.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to customers and what they need. Provide better support and listen to employee suggestions. Needs to focus more on customer support and not only on sales.

    Pros

Can do attitude. This is a great company if it did not have the items in CONS. You have the ability to learn and move with the flow. There are tons of opportunities to learn and really make a difference.

    Cons

To focused on sales. If you hate selling anything, this is not the place for you. All Management cares about is hitting the goals. Which is not a bad thing, but you have to have a solid product. Most clients are fooled by the Salesman (No brainer here) and Client Services will take the heat. This isnt a problem because you just bring the Sales guy back in the picture.

Management is ambitious. But over the top ambitious. They'll shoot themselves in the foot if they have not done so already.

    - Work/live balance tips on the Work side heavily
    - Compensation is okay. Build experience and jump to a competitor.
    - Career Opportunities are available if you can sell. Test yourself, find a product you know is dysfunctional, and see how many people you can sell it to. The first 3 don't count.
    - CEO is on cloud 9.
    - Country Vice Presidents: Suck.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Profit is not a dirty word. Profiting from something where there is nothing, that is another story. Create stronger products, higher professional managers for countries, invest/develop the office. Built a rapport both with clients and co-workers. This hopefully will lead to profit.

    Pros

There is a young energy as all employees are in their late 20's to early 30's. There is opportunity to do well and advance within the company.

    Cons

The company does very well in Europe where it was founded, but has had great difficulty growing in the US market where there is a slew of established competition. Aspects of the software and the goals for it are very impressive, but prospects and clients find that there are bugs and a challenging ui. Nonetheless, expect a high degree of pressure to hit sales numbers.

    Pros

The people were great and the base salary was good.

    Cons

The founder never took the advice of his senior leadership team and was set in his ways...this stopped the company moving in the direction they should have. You can only take it so far before needing a new strategy

    Justification for Collateral Damage

I have been working at SmartFocus

    Pros

From a cynical perspective, it's interesting to be exposed to the ruthlessness of management/owners when attempting to squeeze out some value from struggling company. As it was frequently made very explicit by management to SmartFocus employees, said employees are viewed as simply expenses and units of work that can be used (or thrown away) to increase in the short-term the (perceived) value of the company to others. Working in this atmosphere, which some may argue is how companies should be run, helps prepare one for a career that may involve working for management having similar perspectives. Or one can learn such working environments are to avoid at all costs. Regardless, a learning experience that doesn't leave you neutral.

    Cons

For those who look for a workplace in which management treats employees as people worthy of investment, SmartFocus is not the place to be. Dissenting opinions, no matter how constructive, are quickly and strongly discouraged (and viewed as justification for driving out employees with "bad attitudes"). Reporting lines and responsibilities are left vague as to ensure only top management can arbitrate decisions. Management by spreadsheet drives out medium and long-term decision-making. Other than that, nothing really bad about working there.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Good luck with the turn around. Maybe you'll succeed in the plan and management will get richer after all. Perhaps be a tad more careful about collateral damage along the way.
