  1. Great technical team, sometimes less-than-great leadership

    Positive Outlook

    I worked at SmartOps full-time

    Pros

Very talented developers, great business value, solid customer base. Good start-up environment with reasonable funding. Hired the right people for the right reasons in most product development and delivery teams.

    Cons

Single-vision of getting sold sometimes hampered the ability to make the best talent and technology investment decisions. Egos at the top made for a challenging environment, but still an educational one.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your veterans as well as your customers. The people who work for you aren't the enemy. Encourage excellence from each member of the team.

  2. Great people who are enthusiastic but too often diminished by senior management

    Pros

Great people Solid products Great customers Good benefits

    Cons

Senior leadership is not business savvy and treats employees poorly

    Advice to Management

Infuse some professional management to take the company to the next level

  3. Solid technology but requires stronger leadership

    Doesn't Recommend

    Pros

Product offers real value in the marketplace. Fair compensation upside for the industry. Sales comissions based on a percentage of license revenue generated.

    Cons

There is really only one product sold by the company, which limits the potential for future growth. The Board of Directors and executive leadership seems distracted by a focus on selling the company and exiting the industry rather than investing for future success. "Career tracks" are never discussed or planned for, encouraging any upwardly-mobile employees to leave.

    Advice to Management

Replace current management with a team willing to focus on a longer-term growth strategy. The Enterprise technology cycle is too fast for this company to coast on one product forever.
