  1. CATERING: Great to student workers

I have been working at Smith College part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Catering staff are friendly, easy to work with, and happy to teach new skills in cooking and serving. I wasn't expecting to learn much from this job but I did!

    Cons

Inconsistent work. At the beginning of any given semester you have no idea how much you'll work, which is frustrating for budgeting.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Great place to work, thanks for creating such a great employment opportunity for students! Glad I found this as early as I did.

I have been working at Smith College part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

The greatest thing about working at Smith is the support you get from colleagues and administrators. They are extremely understanding and always willing to help.

    Cons

The weather. The snow and the wind. At this time of the year, I don't even want to go outside. Plus, Northampton is a small town and you eventually run out of fun things to do. But it is still very trendy and special.

I have been working at Smith College

    Pros

The people are very friendly and willing to teach you whatever it takes to do the job

    Cons

Sometime working pace can be really slow and if you're conducting campus tours there might be no one showing up. Or sometimes there're too many people scheduled to give the same tours.

I worked at Smith College (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Worked as a student worker in the IT department for three years, great job. Can do homework or play games when just sitting around to wait for help calls to come in.

    Cons

Training was a bit spotty when I was trained and the managers had a lot of turnover thr last year. I think training has improved since then though.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep more written instructions around for when senior workers aren't there to instruct the newbies.

I have been working at Smith College (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Amazing campus. Wonderful Students. The staff is really wonderful and always willing to help. The work study opportunities are really great and allow you to work with amazing people.

    Cons

The town is a small college town so it might be hard to find things to do. It might also be hard to find a place that isn't crawling with students from Smith and surrounding colleges.

I worked at Smith College as a contractor (more than a year)

    Pros

These two jobs provided better pay than most on campus jobs and are not too time intensive

    Cons

Unrealistic pay expectations when teaching else where than this private college. Cannot make as much at gyms or health clubs.

  11. Lot of work for little pay, but great campus and town

    I worked at Smith College

    Pros

Beautiful campus, progressive town, diversity, ability to at least theoretically take classes on campus as part of benefits package.

    Cons

As a student, students are given a tremendous amount of respect and there appears to be total transparency. As staff, dysfunctional office environments seemed to be brushed under the carpet more than I had expected given Smith ideals. I was offered a much better job at a CT university for about 1.5 times as much as I was earning at Smith.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to all staff. Carry over general college ideals to your staff.
