    A company with great potential

    ProsCompany was growing and you could learn a great deal with new clients with projects in different industries. Informal atmosphere was conducive to collaboration.

    ConsInformal networks even inside this small work place environment hindered getting exposure to major projects. Senior leadership was sometimes too remote.

    Advice to Senior ManagementKeep your people connected to the vision of the company and with each other to keep this healthy company culture thriving.

    Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

    Great place to work!

    ProsInformal, non-corporate culture (the owners bring their dogs to work!) that emphasizes using one's strengths to grow professionally thus focusing more on intrinsic than extrinsic motivation.

    Solid, long-term relationships with clients due to focus on ethical practices and the belief that "relationships are everything."

    Fun and friendship in the SDA family is encouraged with planned and random events that enable a positive rapport.

    Leaders to a great job of keeping employees informed of important changes/announcements via monthly scheduled and ad hoc meetings. They also show real concern for the lives of their employees beyond their work contributions.

    Bureaucracy and policy-making is kept to a minimum.

    Salary and benefits are quite competitive.

    The company and the owners have won awards for their class-leading work and for being an exemplary workplace.

    ConsThis is not the place to work for people looking to climb a company ladder. The organization is flat and the work ethos is about teams made up of the right talent for the task not permanent hierarchical leadership.

    The downside of being a boutique business is less than ubiquitous name recognition.

    Advice to Senior ManagementKeep things going. Keep managing the company in a conservative manner - particularly as the economic situation continues to unfold. Though times are serious, don't let us become too serious. And Thanks.

    A company that truly values relationships and people

    ProsHaving worked at many different companies, I can honestly say that Smith-Dahmer Associates is the best employer I have ever had. The people who work at the company care about the work they do and the people they work with. The company is based on a solid set of values that put people first. You will not find many companies that still keep strong benefits packages (full medical, short and long-term disability, paid family leave, four-week vacation for ALL employees) during tough economic times. But Smith-Dahmer leaders believe these things are important for its employees. The work at the company provides new challenges on a daily basis. The relaxed, yet professional culture of the company is still a strong reason that I work at Smith-Dahmer.

    Smith-Dahmer faces the same human resource challenges that all business face and is seeking to improve consistently. There is no such thing as a job that is perfect on a daily basis, but working at Smith-Dahmer is probably the closest thing you will find.

    ConsThe company sometimes goes through pains as it changes to manage growth, but that is the case in almost all small-businesses.

    Advice to Senior ManagementMake sure that the values and culture of the company are not lost during growth.
