I have been working at Smith International full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The sent me to many training classes and I felt that I was part of the "team" and that I was being mentored for a management position.

    Cons

Too many changes with upper management. Smith International was purchased by Schlumberger during my time with the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take time to listen to your direct reports on their goals and what direction they would like to take their career.

I worked at Smith International full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Family feeling, a lot of freedom to do and very little bureaucracy. The environment is not challenging and the stress level is kept pretty low, some people spent decades in this company without any issue and usually seniority gives you decent promotions especially if you go in the management path. Time off is mostly on a honor system.

    Cons

If you aren't in the right loop or under the wrong manager, is going to be tough. Managers don't move around, especially the bad ones and the company doesn't lay them off easily. Quite some talented people left for that reason and is not good for the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Move managers around more often,

I worked at Smith International full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

They really cared about their salary and hourly employees. Great benefits and compensation and the ability to learn more through education and training. Very community oriented through philanthropic means.

    Cons

Upper management is not really regarded as useful once they hit 55 years of age. Certain senior management will not promote unless you are degreed from their alma mater.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Older people are valuable.

I have been working at Smith International (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Opportunities for overtime. This is a good place for a starter in the oil field

    Cons

Promotions are based on who you know rather than your knowledge and what you can bring to the table. Raises are a set amount for every individual so work ethic is irrelevant. Whether you learn new things or just do the bare minimum, everybody gets the same raise every six months.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest in your work force and reward employees who go above and beyond the requirements. As things stand, there is no incentive for anyone to do better than the next guy.
