I worked at Smith Micro full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Salary and benefits, full gym on site for all employees to use, a high profile international company, some interesting products

    Cons

Poor leadership, too many middle management roles, dreary workplace, uninspiring morale, lack of direction, remote working available only for upper management = double standard, outdated in every possible level

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

enable workforce to take ownership, happy workers are productive workers, the office should not be a drone farm, use technology to make life easier for everyone

    Pros

There are some talented and committed staff members who work hard and believe in the products they are building.

    Cons

Not a product company; more like a consulting shop. Management has little trust in their direct reports, and definitely do not empower the worker bees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pick a direction/focus and stick with it. Empower your employees and appreciate their hardwork.

I have been working at Smith Micro full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Pay was reasonably good, plus a solid amount of vacation and sick time

    Cons

SMSI is literally circling the drain - all the talented engineers have jumped shimp. They are loosing money and are starting to throw up pie-in-the-sky hopes at getting a product that will save them, however Management hasn't been able to make up its mind of which direction they should go.

If you get a job here, just keep your resumes out because there is no way that this company will exist in 2015 in any meaningful way.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You bought a 240 person office space in Pittsburgh, but the company went from "Profitable" to "Sinking" so fast that the maximum number of employees peaked around 65 (totally botched!) - and yet management was given a raise, while most employees havent seen any money in 3+ years.

To the positive reviewer that just posted here: SMSI doesn't have an office in New York, so that is clearly fake.

I worked at Smith Micro full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Coworkers were usually helpful and the daily perks of working at SM were okay. Flexible hours and decent coffee. The work wasn't hard just not too exciting. Easy living.

    Cons

Management needs leadership training. This isn't even a knock on the company, this is a serious deficiency. They have managers who shouldn't be managing. A select few knew how to manage but those were far and few between.

Training budget is virtually is non-existent. Expect to train on your own dime.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Longevity and loyalty does not translate to "qualified".

    Pros

Very flexible work place, and most of the people are nice.

    Cons

Gone downhill. The management is just trying to do do something hoping to succeed without thinking carefully which eventually fails anyway.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Former Employee - Senior Software Engineer in Aliso Viejo, CA

I worked at Smith Micro full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Competitive benefits.
    - Good work/life balance. Some people are allowed to work remotely.
    - No matter how you perform, you don't have to worry about your position till the next big layoff.

    Cons

    - I do not agree with other reviewers saying the top management is the cause of the problem. The reality is it's a 100% management-driven company with ridiculously incompetent management at all levels. Most managers do not have enough technical knowledge to drive their projects. They are concentrated not on the actual job, but on trying to keep their positions. As a result, no competitive products, no contracts. Former customers run away from the company.
    - Extremely inefficient development process. Ten people can work on the task that could be done by one person. Also there's too many development formalities for a company in a deep crisis.
    - Engineering opinion means nothing if you are not the CTO. The best technologies produced by the company typically end their life on the shelf. Wanna live a peaceful life? Follow management directions not matter how silly they are. All good engineers are finally living the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It makes no sense to advise something, since nobody is willing to listen. The company has no future. It is slowly dying hoping for a miracle. There are several bright technical leads who could potentially change the situation, but they won't be given power to do it.
