    I have been working at Smith & Nephew full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    Have worked in this company for 10+ years. S&N has always maintained a leadership position in the field of medical devices (orthopedics, endoscopy, wound management,....). The products the company sells are of great quality and help people regain their lives. Employees understand this and helps in building and maintaining the company culture. The majority of employees are quite friendly and they are the best asset the company has. Benefits have always been quite competitive.

    Cons

    The company has changed quite a bit in the last 3-5 years. It used to be much more positive and employees were like family. The current CEO, Olivier Bohuon, has implemented many radical changes and changed the way employees think about the company. Bohuon has focused on acquiring other companies to continue to grow S&N. His strategy has also emphasized cost reductions through the entire company, closing several manufacturing sites and offices. Some of the cost reduction measures are quite silly when the company could be doing things better to save money. Benefits continue to be reduced compared to years ago, mainly around health insurance (however, they are still fair).

    Try to find ways to reduce costs by looking into how employees can improve the company.

    Pros

    The company is trying to consolidate their systems and provide resources to its employees. Has a good financial status and is acquiring companies.

    Cons

    The company is going through extreme amounts of change. It is changing systems and there is some outsourcing being done so there is some downsizing going on. The management expects employees to take on a lot of work (and hours) without compensating them. There is resistance to some changes because of the us vs them mentality.

    Take care of your employees and offer a better work-life balance

    Direct management not involved 100% with production expectations.
    Not compliant with deadlines.
    Lack of constructive communications between departments.
    Lack of concern for morale is exhausting. Most managers appear to have been with the company long time and consider themselves none replaceable

    Solid products for the most part. Good reputation in the OR

    Cons

    Not flexible with customers on pricing. OR is a changing market. Cost is king. HR does not take concerns seriously.

    Pros

    Autonomy in field as a sales rep. You can run territory like it's your own business. Products pretty good, but nothing revolutionary.

    Cons

    Sales rep pay is among the lowest in the industry. Rigid IT process that handcuffs the sales team.

    Everyone in the company is a taker (e.g. absorbs revenue) except for Sales, which drives revenue. In addition to taking care of R&D, reward the sales team that drives your revenue vs. trying to create plans that cut sales compensation.

    You will have no competition if trying to get a job here.

    Cons

    There was an awful disaster in this division on 6/11/14 when the FDA issued a mandatory recall on the entire Renasys AWD product line. No product to sell, all customers that took so long to establish have jumped ship and will most likely not return if product ever makes it back to market next year.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Find someone else to assess whether updates need a 510k process submission than the one you were using.
