    I have been working at Smiths Group full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

    Good culture - strong focus on ethical behaviour.

    Work/life balance is good.

    Emphasis on development and training of staff, even though it's sometimes difficult to see.

    Cons

    Benefits - health and 401k/retirement/pension - have gone downhill in recent years

    Sometimes difficult to advance - there is some hiring from within, but the more senior positions tend to be from outside.

    Bonuses only seem to be available to senior management, and base pay increases of anything more than 1-2% are rare.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Improve the review system. A 1-5 system doesn't make sense if 95% of people get a 3. Implement bonuses and/or raises at all levels tied to a combination of personal objectives and business performance.

    I worked at Smiths Group

    Pros

    The company that i worked for was purchased by smiths group. During the first couple of years everything was OK. Benefits were good. I think that pay was on par with other similar companies.

    Cons

    After smiths purchase our division, our location started to decline in work. Several layoff insued and the location was eventually almost completelly shutdown. A skeleton crew remains at the location, but most have either moved on or were let go.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Let people know what is going on with purchases of other companies, and there future.

    Very empowering environment with opportunities to develop and ahhieve

    Cons

    Lack of reward and recognition for performance. Overly focussed now on cost saving and manufacturing footprint chages. unimaginative strategy same as many others in this sector of growth in emerging markets

    Get back to basics to retain and motivate the talent you have.
    Forget the bottom line for now and concentrate on the top line, you need to show some confidence and invest.

    The global experience and knowledge gave you a breath of competence beyond what is available in a domestic setting.

    Cons

    The UK centric management does not take full advantage of the global resources it has at its disposal.
