I have been working at Smoothstone IP Communications

    Pros

    Cutting edge entrepreneurial environment.

Mix between the mentality of a west coast start up, with the stability and conscious of a blue chip technology company.

    Work hard, play hard.

    Cons

Can be a challenging stressful environment

Little or no tolerance for “slacking”

Employees are expected to give 150% all the time.

Environment can be not very forgiving, and you are expected to continually learn.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep growing, keep changing things up. You have grown this business from nothing into a meaningful company. Keep that competitive edge.

    Pros

Many intelligent employees that you can learn a lot from.
Reasonable about being away from work when necessary.
    Treat interviewers like rock stars.
While not encouraged, you can approach senior management and get their ear.

    Cons

More than its fair share of constant annoyances.
Glacially slow to react to complaints by employees.
Management initiatives are lurching, and usually do not address a real problem.
Once hired, compensation levels are ignored until complaints are received.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

In general, treat employees as if they are as instrumental in the success of the company as they really are.

  5.

Mixed. The company has superior but over-priced service offerings, chincy to agents, internal politics too rampant.

I worked at Smoothstone IP Communications

    Pros

    - Solid products
    - Well articulated service offerings & sales approach
    - Good, high caliber, committed employees for the most part
    - Good culture...on the surface

    Cons

    - No appreciation of rep skill sets (very short-sited - even hriing reps for their immediate funnel)
    - No commitment to sales staff. Looong trail of former sales reps. Vast majority of non- HQ based reps never make it a year
    - Judge sales reps very inequitably. HQ-based reps who get handed piles of leads justifiably do well. Remote-based reps get few to no leads and who work twice as hard typically struggle building market acceptance (of this premium-positioned service offering). Company pulled staff out of many markets due to their inability to recohnize this very real fact.
    - Saw back-stabbing (executives of executives particularly) of monumental proportions: Saw a V.P. of Marketing and and a V.P. of Business Development (people who literally put Smoothstone on the map) thrown under the bus in a highly calculated/choreographed power-play to cover for the shortcomings of the executives 'executing' the play. (A power-play the CEO clearly should have been able to recognize for what it was...if he weren't too pre-occupied running his other companies).
    - Cheap & arrogant to agents.
    - Engineering arrogance (forcing reps to walk away from deals that no other VoIP provider would)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay more attention to what's really going on in your company. Some of your top executives have sold you very short for their own personal survival.
