not knowing if you'll make enough when hours are cut

    Deli Clerk (Current Employee)

Proslost of opportunities to move up in the work force.

Consno employee discounts, it would be nice to have a $10 card for lunch if anything?

Advice to Senior ManagementI would like it if the would give there part-time employes some security. For example not knowing when hours get cut if ill be able to get the hours i need in order to live.

OK if you are young and energetic and fit in well with the crowd.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsThey hire young people fresh out of high school and college. Good for getting people into the work force or back into it. They train on-the-job and you might get promoted to shift supervisor, cash office, or something else. A lot of decent people work for Sobeys so you might find some friends too.

ConsLack of organization; high turnover of staff; lack of consistency with policies and personnel. Lack of teamwork and fair treatment. Takes excellence in customer service a little too far, letting customers become abusive.

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease create more genuine openness, and foster a safer environment physically and psychologically. Treat others as you would want to be treated if you were in their shoes.

    Fairly friendly

    Produce Clerk (Current Employee)
    Edmonton, AB (Canada)

ProsCoworkers are friendly and has a family feel to it.
    Management is polite towards employees.

ConsCorporate tends to give short notice for audits, then cancels at the last minute.
Raises are small and only given after 6 months of employment, assuming you got 40 hour weeks.

Advice to Senior ManagementIncrease the raises to good employees and make them more frequent to increase productivity. Offer bonuses to good employees, in order to motivate them, so they feel wanted.

Do not work here if you have a family that you love.

    Produce Clerk (Current Employee)

ProsGood Pay. Although this means a lot of money is wasted on unproductive staff.

ConsEveryone gets hired on contract. No communication. No consistency from store to store. Every employee is miserable. Manager in Training programs run constantly, but there are no managers jobs to be had. When a managers role comes up - An outside candidate is usually hired (Most from Metro).
NO work-life balance. Sobeys does not recognize the families of their employees.

Advice to Senior ManagementGive your employees some praise once in a while! Reward them periodically - one weekend off in a year is more than reasonable.

Everyone hates the DM...and with good reason. He is extremely shady - even on his best days.

Over the years have become very stressful...not a happy worker

    Hard Worker (Current Employee)
    Waterloo, ON (Canada)

ProsBecame friends with other employees that now helps the shift go by faster.
The customers help the store environment.
Convenient when I need to buy groceries after work.

ConsNo room for full time. Even when you apply and are told full time is available have the interview more then 1 position and still no full time hiring happens.
Hand book rules changing all the time.
Hours cut while watching other employees from other store being transferred to your dept. NOT COOL
These are just a few things....

    The good people at Sobeys

    Cashier (Former Employee)
    New Minas, NS (Canada)

ProsFriendly, local-minded employers who value their employees and are interested in making the work environment pleasant.

Advice to Senior ManagementLook for ways to grow employees further, integrate corporate roles.
