    Pros

This company hires people who reflect the communities it serves. There's no arrogance at the Gas Co. and nobody cares where you went to school. In fact, the company has been extremely supportive of my choice to pursue additional education.

The company cares deeply about diversity, so if you're not willing to work with people from all walks of life you won't fit in.

    Cons

Career opportunities and advancement comes down to visibility and who you know. However, in a large and bureaucratic organization, you can't always know everyone and be highly visible unless you are constantly selling and marketing yourself. The company can be highly resistant to change.

    Advice to Management

Make sure you are addressing the needs of the millennial generation

    Pros

Union representation, good pay, comfortable office, customer service oriented, plenty of sick days and vacation days. For someone who's not attempting to get into management, office politics are not an issue. A lot of time and money goes into its employees in potlucks and incentives for working safely. Even though advancement is mainly based on seniority so people who may not be best qualified for a position may get it, a lot of training and coaching is provided so employees are competent.

    Cons

It's very easy to get too comfortable and settle in one position if you're not proactive. This isn't the company's fault but it does happen.

    Advice to Management

More opportunities for training in different fields.

    Pros

Flexible schedule, good pay and benefits, very stable.

    Cons

Cutthroat, politics dominates, can be long hours, promotions in most cases is who you know and not what you know.

    Pros

Very stable (natural gas will be here for a long time and its almost impossible to be let go), yearly bonus, generally friendly people, nice building downtown, 401K AND a pension (which is rare),

    Cons

Lower than market pay, politics, old school, likes to hire from low ranked colleges (LaVerne, CalState), advanced education is not valued or required, bitter life long employees, no progression at all unless you jump around from department to department (its the only way to get ahead), your title will be very "junior" despite years of service -which is to your disadvantage if you look externally for a job,

    Advice to Management

Management just rotates like a merry go around - same people swap the top jobs. No one breaks into upper management unless they choose to take you under their wing. I will say this - people here stay for life. If you try to disrupt their stability by being too ambitious, they will hold you down unless they can use you to further their own career.

  9. Utility Industry - Politics dominates

I have been working at Socalgas as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Pay, location in Downtown Los Angeles (mall/food/shopping on lunch break), benefits such as 50% of gym membership paid.

    Cons

Very boring work, nothing fun about the Gas Company. Coworkers love to bash each other, get wasted together at the local pubs after work and then gossiping about who hooked up with who the next day.

    Advice to Management

One of the managers spent way too much time being hostile to me, an intern. He wasn't even in the same department as me. He triend trashing me to my manager and my supervisor but they knew I was a good employee. Sad he had nothing better to do than run an internship program and coordinate brown bag lunches.

Heavy nepotism is obvious. When 90% of the interns' parents are directors, it's obvious they don't pick the brightest of the bunch. Their own scholarship program only accepts students whose parents work for the company. What a joke.

    Pros

Lots of exercise, great pay, you would get gift cards to restaurants for doing your job right every month.

    Cons

It gets challenging to deal with customers since you are going in and out of their backyards, you sometimes deal with dogs that are not properly put away.
