Overworked and underpaid

Loan Operations (Current Employee)
New York, NY

I have been working at Société Générale

ProsGood work/life balance - good benefits. Conveniently located in midtown Manhattan or Jersey City

ConsMiddle to upper management is usually filled with Frenchies who complete an Inspector position for several years - despite no knowledge of how business runs. They are placed into these roles with no managerial training.

Advice to Senior ManagementGive your local employees a fair opportunity to advance within the organization in place of all the Frenchies. We get that it's a French bank but each location should also represent the country that it is doing business in.

Requires a Lot of Patience

Vice President (Current Employee)
New York, NY

I have been working at Société Générale

ProsHours are ridiculously good. Work/life balance is not a problem.

ConsPay is about 30% off market; bonuses are similar. The sense is that the Company rewards are given according to nationality rather than a meritocracy. Don't always feel like you work with the smartest in the field.

Advice to Senior ManagementPromote internally and allow for better movement of people across different sectors of the bank.

avoid this place

Trader Assistant (Current Employee)
New York, NY

I have been working at Société Générale

Proseasy going environment, very casual, very diverse

Conswhere do i start?!
-red tape/ steep management hierarchy pretty much ensures nothing get done
- aloof management
- byzantine systems
- a type of place where you show up for a training class and the computers are missing or software is not installed.
- forget recognition, it does not exist here
-finally, do not expect to be compensated fairly at year end. This company spends top dollar to lure away business people from the best banks like Goldman/JPM/MS; the rest get peanuts.

Advice to Senior Managementflatten the org, reap the benefits

The worst professional experience I have encountered in over 20 years.

Director (Former Employee)
New York, NY

I worked at Société Générale

ProsHours are not bad - normal day is just 9 hours.
Vacation time is truly vacation -backup to cover your work while you're out.

ConsSome groups are truly hostile work environments. Both H.R and Management are aware of these departments and yet allow the abuse to continue. It is truly a lawsuit waiting to happen. Also, do not believe a word H.R tells you about compensation. Unless if you get it in writing, it will definitely be imbelished just to get you in the door but the package offered will not be the package you receive.

Advice to Senior ManagementTerminate the hostile management immediately. If a manager has at least 5 complaints brought against her, it is a clear warning sign that the management needs to be replaced.

Very precious opportunity to start your career in financial industry.

Assistant Trader (Current Employee)
New York, NY

I have been working at Société Générale

ProsThe french company is operated in a different culture as many other US local investment banks. People here are not that aggresive. Though work is busy, but we handle it in a really elegant way.

ConsSG is not willing to sponsor H1B visa for international students. It hires long term full time interns to do assistant jobs on the front desk. It is not necessarily a drawback, as it gives students like me the first experience on the trading desk, but it will not lead to a full time job.

Advice to Senior ManagementIt is a very competitve investment bank in US in the field of basket trading and institutional investor oriented trading.

Nice place to work, don't expect much mobility unless your French.

Analyst (Current Employee)
New York, NY

I have been working at Société Générale

ProsGood company, not bad overall environment. Very highly ranked International Company (looks good on Resume).

Related departments (i.e. Ops - FO and Legal) work fairly close together in order to resolve issues. Gives good opportunity for exposure.

ConsRecently too much Paris oversight -> Daily + Weekly + Monthly + Semi Annual reports.

-Limited chances for mobility or growth if you are not French.

Advice to Senior Management-Management should offer to assist in resolving issues within the team instead of placing blame.
-Try to be better involved in the day to day activities before making decisions.
-Also understand that not everyone can be perfect 100% of the time...pesonal life at times spills into the work place....were not robots, were people!
