I have been working at Société Générale full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The whole package is very complete.
A lot of days off, so that you can have a life outisde work.
Good atmosphere and friendly collegues (but it certainly depends on where you end up working).

    Cons

There is an old-fashioned management style that is shared by all managers. The boss is not the client. The boss is the boss and everybody has to do what they want. It's very difficult to grow an idea or innovation when you're at the bottom of the pyramid.
Also, it's a very big compagny, so don't expect things to go fast...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen more to your employees and their ideas. You should help and support them.

I have been working at Société Générale full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Expects loyalty from employees but does give it back, for such a big corporation the workers are well treated as a whole, still holds (in Paris at least) to the old traditions, having the employees hold a relativly important share of the company avoids the common French "Class War" issues and unions are much less political and more useful than in most other french corporations.

BigCorp(TM) bureaucracy if everywhere, but with a little bit of relationship building with stakeholders and flexibility, the French management is much less rules oriented than US Inspired businesses and much more person oriented, the big bureaucracy is there, but it is more a side cost of doing business than a hard obstacle to growth and communication.

    Cons

The salary is below average, it used to be compensated with awesome bonuses in great business years, but there have been none of them for nearly a decade, on the other hand, competitors who do pay better have had much worse layoffs...

While Socgen used to be the place to be for talents in france, it has lost a lot of glamour with the economic crisis and the "Kerviel Show", for managers, recruiting good people has become hard and there is a growing knowledge and motivation gap between the generation who were recruited when the selection was very hard and the new recruits.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Since Daniel Bouton left, there is an increased feeling of distance between the tranches and the top management, the words from the top are great, but are very often so far from the realities of the terrain that there is a growing distrust of the very deep and complex management hierarchy, politics are an inevitable fact in such a company, but having so many layers of politics is highly fact distorting, people care too much about who will like the message than it's truth.

I have been working at Société Générale as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Life/Work balance work usually starts at 9am and ends at 7pm. Most of other teams even in Fixed Income make more hours
Paycheck is good for internships in Paris
The food is really good at the company canteen

    Cons

My team didn't really need an intern so I got bored at big part of the time
    Poor training quality
(Note that it wasn't the case in other teams where interns were kept busy and well trained)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make sure they really need an intern

    Pros

In French contract, you are provided with security and comfortable annual leaves. Especially when things go bad, you can still get paid instead of being kick out.

    Cons

Compensation is not competitive compared to other banks. Internal mobility is restraint. There are many people who do nothing and still get paid with a good salary.
