    Pros

Many people are quite competent and hard working. You can learn a great deal. You can contribute and be recognized for the contribution.

    Cons

The French do have a bit of a glass ceiling for Americans at the Director and above levels . It is definitely NOT insurmountable, and my impression is that many more expats from France come here to New York than Americans go to Paris. But some Americans DO get through it.

    Advice to Management

Either decide to be International or French - the answer should dictate the worldwide staffing assignments.

    Pros

Pay is market rate and hours are very relaxed.

    Cons

SG does not advance your key or develop your skills as a junior investment banking analyst.

    Advice to Management

Challenge junior bankers more and give more responsibility.

    Pros

    The benefits package is competitive

    Cons

The vision from management is lacking. There is a significant level of internal politics. Communication between groups that should be working together is poor.

    Advice to Management

You need to do a better job of getting everyone on the same page and making sure your managers are providing the appropriate level of leadership. There is a lack of focus in getting the most out of your talented employees. I find the overall level of management to be poor.

    Pros

Better work life balance than in Wall Street banks.
    Generally talented / knowledgeable professionals.

    Cons

Management is cheap. The bank is chronically undercapitalized, which impairs its ability to compete for clients' business, but also to pay bonuses or to reimburse expenses.
Management (in Europe) has been traditionnally unwilling to dedicate resources, including capital, to the development of the business in the US (except to underwrite toxic suprime CDOs in 2004-2007, though to a lesser extent that many competitors).

    Advice to Management

4 years ago, management should have increased equity capital. Now the bank is in disarray. I hope management will know to avoid a complete failure by restructuring/selling its business in parts, ahead of severe disruption, like Dexia.

    Pros

Flexible hours and 4 weeks vacation

    Cons

No opportunity for career advancement or development.
All opportunities go to the French. Trying to route out Americans. Company will never be able to compete in US. High Turnover. No respect.
Very poor compensation compared to peers.

    Advice to Management

    Nothing will help

    Pros

Societe Generale offers a great perspective in terms of careers mixing the culture of Europe and the US

    Cons

Sometimes the mix of all the cultures can be hard and the financial world can be a little bit too fast.

    Pros

    Flexible working environment
    Good work/life balance
    Reasonable hours
Exposure to truly international bank (in NY)
Many good professionals as managers (not all)
Can make a lot of money if strongly desired by management in a market-related position

    Cons

Once you get to senior VP / Director In New York, you have essentially three types of citizens:
    - The French nationals, who got sent overseas from HQ and are therefore well positioned in France
    - The "mercenaries", talented professionals who were aggressively recruited from other institutions, and are well paid
    - The rest. Career advancement and opportunities will be limited in this category, so take the job, learn, but do not expect much in terms of advancement.

    Advice to Management

I will opine on SG's Americas' presence.
Main problem is that it is an OK retail bank in France, but an "also ran" commercial bank in the USA, and a mediocre investment bank in the USA. Senior management expects Goldman Sachs-like performance in the Americas. When this is not met, significant finger-pointing between silos happens. It has some strong niches, notably export and trade finance.
    My advice to management:
    1) lower expectations, play to its strengths (PF, Export Finance, some market activities)
    2) reduce headcount at MD level (too many promotions were given to compensate for sub-market comp), not at the less significant Associate / VP level. Too many middle managers.
    3) The Street understands comp is sub-par. Try to revert this by focusing on profitable segments, paying them well, and eliminating the "fat" (still a lot!).
