Hard work! Lower pay in the southern states, higher pay in the northern states.

Disability Adjudicator (Former Employee)

I worked at Social Security Administration full-time for more than 5 years

ProsDesk job, state government benefits, paid time off, holidays paid off

ConsVery detailed, very hard work, we rank right below judges and doctors and lawyers in skill sets. Adjudicate medical claims for disabled citizens under Social Security Disability. I've been threatened and cursed at over the phone when people are denied their benefits. You deal with a lot of sicknesses, diseases, mental health issues and death claims.

Advice to Senior ManagementMy management was great, it was just the amount of work.

No opportunity for growth

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Social Security Administration as an intern for more than a year

ProsA comfortable work environment with easy going folks who did not micro manage. There was some freedom to increase efficiencies within the organization and a great deal of feedback for both improvement but also edification. Quality people, some of whom actually care about the public they are servicing.

ConsPositions that seem to open up for which you may be qualified have "candidates" already in place so don't bother trying to advance.your career as there is quite a bit of bureaucracy involved.

Advice to Senior ManagementLet some young bloods move up and improve your work processes using a little something called Technology. You see talent, do everything you can to keep it!
And stop telling employees to pace themselves because it is a government job. That is no way to run a business and it encourages apathy which doesn't help your cause.

Repetitive boring tasks, but well paid

Summer Aide (Current Employee)
San Jose, CA

I have been working at Social Security Administration as an intern for less than a year

ProsGreat pay. I was only an intern for the summer but I was paid $14/hr for doing simple administrative duties like faxing and alphabetically organizing files. Once you get the job, you also have a leg up on getting into other government jobs. The management was very open and friendly to referrals and I had the option of being referred into any department if I wanted to.

ConsTasks are mundane. You get real friendly with the fax machine and you're assigned all the leftover grunt work that no one else wants to do.
