Great company - wonderful people & product

Professional Services (Current Employee) Raleigh, NC

ProsCool product, they train you on everything you want to know. Nice, fun people. Some of the best & brightest people work here. The product is always being improved upon & it's because they listen to input of people who work with it everyday.

ConsThey are growing fast & lots of new people to meet

You're allowed to go home at the end of the day, but no chance for advancement in dev departments.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Raleigh, NC

ProsMost non-leaders get the weekends/evenings off. They bring in snacks. Okay place to get experience.

ConsYou keep the salary you come in with indefinitely. They dangle good experience tasks like candy, but no one gets them. The company is run by a cabal of women who aggressively discriminate against men (and could not care less about software). Complaining against men is widespread and frequent. Discrimination against aged developers is extreme (they are very public about it). Dev departments are flat and no one ever gets promoted. You spend 1/3 of your time defending your work (instead of actually working). Many depts require you to leave no sooner than 9 hours after you get there.

Advice to Senior ManagementMediocre compensation will yield mediocre interest from the best employees/candidates. You get what you reward. Stop running SoftPro like it is a Title/Escrow company! You make software! That's what your customers want!

Great people in a nice environment but lacking significant incentives

Software Engineer (Current Employee) Raleigh, NC

ProsThe working environment is very employee-friendly and the schedules are flexible.
Management does its best to get out of the way and let you do your job.
The company is very good at hiring people that work well together.

ConsThe salaries are on the low end of average.
There are few (if any) opportunities for advancement.

Advice to Senior ManagementRecognize and compensate employees who excel and avoid the situation where all area knowledge is held by a single team member.

    good place to work

    (Former Employee) Raleigh, NC

Pros1. Enjoyable place to work if in R&D, though other departments seemed to have high morale.
    2. Was very team oriented, the opposite of the "shark tank" atmosphere at some companies; for this reason, didn't have to continually worry about security of job.
    3. Not very stressful; one can devote energy to doing actual work rather than to CYA (covering one's back).

    Cons1. Limited advancement.
    2. Boring at times.
    3. Corp policy disallows any current employee giving a reference to anyone (even if that employee no longer works at SoftPro); this can hinder finding a new place of employment and puts employees in awkward positions when asked to do so.

Advice to Senior ManagementFind ways of challenging or "stretching" employees, but without sacrificing the existing (and very good) company culture and collaborative atmosphere.

Relax or rescind the unfair policy disallowing employees from giving references to others.

    No reference for you

Software Engineer (Former Employee) Raleigh, NC

ProsThey keep you busy. Good opportunity to learn some cutting edge stuff.

ConsSome reviewers have mentioned that SoftPro is only good for those starting their career as there are no growth opportunities. This may be true, however, be aware that it is a company policy not to give references or recommendations. When it's time for you to move on, and recruiters are asking for former manager's references, don't count on SoftPro to provide them, even if you did a hell of a job there.

It was a good ride until the rules changed

Team Lead (Former Employee) Raleigh, NC

ProsA stable market where there is little competition.
    Inter-departmental cooperation is strong.
The company stays on top of current technology.

    ConsAdvancement is not readily available.
    Raises/Promotions were minimal.
Bonuses became small and less frequent.
New owners seemingly changed enforcement of policy.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend
