    I worked at Solers

    Pros

-One of the best 401(k) deals not matching but giving 8%
-Don't have to worry about working past 5 pm / easy to separate work and life and plan vacations, etc
-Though based on project, most managers are understanding of schedules and are flexible
    - Higher managers are approachable though I am not sure if they are paying attention to what the individual engineer has to say.
    -Own office
-Frequent Bonuses. A con is that no one knows what these bonuses are based off of.
-Most of the people you work with are very intelligent and helpful.

    Cons

    - No work from home policy, though some middle managers will work from home. You will have a manager tell you you cannot work from home when its snowing but that same manager will send an email saying "I am working from home today because it is snowing / someone is sick. You can get a hold of me via email or on my cell"
    - Engineers are not given freedom to install new software without getting permission from IT. This can make your project more difficult when your system does not have the adequate tools to complete a job but you must wait for someone to install new software / adjust a setting on your computer since you do not have the permission.
    - Projects are not exciting

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

VPs: Create a system where employees can review their managers.

    * Good work/life balance

    Cons

I worked at Solers full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

    - Great benefits: insurance, HSA, 401k deposit, all are great
     - Good pay
     - Some interesting work
     - Work life balance can be okay depending on the team

    Cons

    - Poor culture: negative reviews out of nowhere, many managers looking to find someone to blame, and no way to provide feedback upwards
     - Very few opportunities for upwards advancement
     - Unpleasant team dynamics as a result of the cutthroat atmosphere
     - Some very boring work with bad, outdated technologies

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow 360 degree feedback and encourage open and honest communication rather than an oppressive, cutthroat atmosphere.

I worked at Solers full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Projects are abundant and very interesting; an effort is made to apply cutting edge technologies and ideas when possible, and co-workers are so engaged and talented that I had many opportunities to gain industry and technical knowledge. Additionally, the team structure, internal organization, and configuration management tools that have been set up make the software development process run smoother than I've seen at any other software contracting company.

    Cons

Inter-project communication could be more frequent, to let employees know what the rest of the company is working on.

    12. Tuition Reimbursement, 10K per year
    13. Metro benefit or parking is provided

    Cons

    1. Benefits are being cut
    2. No interesting or novel work
    3. Mostly customer task based work, nothing proprietary being developed
    4. Raises do not seem to reflect performance whatsoever
    5. "Profit Sharing" program is meant for the old timers, not new people
    6. Management makes engineers feel dispensable
    7. Company is not growing, so promotions are hard to come by
    8. Promotions come with out raises
    9. Strict no work from home
    10. No flex time policy

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

This company has so much overhead, needs to adapt and reduce the corporate foot print until there is more work. Fix the mentality that engineers are not valuable, you are an engineering company! Bring back a forum for employees to voice their opinions to upper management.

The point of a small company is to feel like you matter, and this is not the case here. The bottom line is show engineers they can make a career here without becoming a manager.

I worked at Solers full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Benefits are great and you work in small teams where you get noticed. If you put in the time you will get promoted unlike companies that just take your output and say thanks.

    Cons

Working for a government that can't pass a budget

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I witnessed a 95% management competency, you have the "How did you get this job?" staff at all jobs so I would say don't change a thing

Career development still needs some work from within. The company has made a conscious effort to improve this, but work still needs to be done to help staff grow.

    Pros

Nice benefits and perquisites (holiday parties, national tickets). Relaxed environment in most offices. Some very knowledgeable co-workers

    Cons

Little room to move up or advance once you're are in the company. The company is small and there are "inner circles" that you can get into for job security and advancement. If you're in then all is well but if not then you are somewhat of an outsider

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Define a clear path of advancement. Ensure that the goal review process is meaningful.
