    Pros

Middle management talk too much but fails to walk the talking. Blaming and finger pointing are their trade marks...

    Cons

Worst backstabbing IT shop that I ever worked for. This place is hostile, management displays an "Ostrich syndrome" approach to see the storm is going to pass, even if the storm is getting wider and stronger. No respect or appreciation from management regardless of how hard you work to please their clients (Doctors and patients). They lead the assets and manage the employees instead of leading the people and managing the assets. They treat you as if you are a piece of property with an inventory tag on your forehead. If you are a minority, forget it and run away as fast as you can, this is the worst discriminating IT shop that exist on the face of the earth!!

    Advice to Management

Treat your programmers and Analyst with little respect and dignity. DO NOT TREAT THEM AS IF THEY ARE YOUR SLAVES!!!!

    Pros

None, really. The culture is bad, the benefits are awful, and pay is terrible. Really no redeeming qualities about this place.

    Cons

Upper IT management is dishonest, starting with the CIO. Decisions are mad entirely based on emotion, so being disliked is a death sentence here. Especially if you're disliked for being ethical. If you work for sonic, DO NOT alert ANYONE to patient safety or legal issues - you will be drummed out by any means possible to keep the word from getting back to Australia. Corporate IT is populate by sycophants and led by a sociopath whose ability to lie is matched only by his ability to feign competence. Wow. I've never seen someone so savvy at being all talk. WHOLE LOT of empty suits at Sonic. Corporate HR is completely out of touch with the company, lazy, and cares little about its labs or the people who work for them. Patient safety issues are ignored on the local level. The emphasis is on avoiding CAP reportables above all else. Problems with instruments causing faulty results? Don't correct those reports, re-draw! The list goes on, but suffice to say Sonic is not a compatible workplace for people with ethics or integrity. Patients are not safe sending their work to a Sonic laboratory.

    Advice to Management

Find a new career or hire a good lawyer. Or both.

    Pros

    Good clinicians in the labs.

    Cons

Lousy pay plans for anyone other than pathologists and execs.

    Advice to Management

Integrate all labs under the parent company to better compete with LabCorp and Quest. The splintered approach is the worst one.

    Pros

They have loads of money, however spend it foolishly.

    Cons

Boy where is start: They are a company stuck in the 90's, with the processes and policies. They require all IT people to wear slacks and dress shirt, if you are luck maybe nice jeans and shirt on Friday. Certainly no IT casual dress. The equipment is marginal, the developers get laptops with the same specs as sales and secretaries, under powered and no drive space. The current IT Director is a micro manager, with a new restrictive policy ever week or two. And forget working remotely, if sick take a PTO day. There are few developers for the work that needs to be done, and they continually talk about replacing the current apps with some old antiquated language. So if you are looking for a job from the 90's with micro management and bosses who care more about their bonuses, then this place is for you.

    Advice to Management

Move forward and embrace new technology. Stop the massive traveling and living well on the company dime. And most important, respect and treat your employees well, they are your most valuable asset, not your buildings, equipment or out dated technology. Develope a culture like Google, Twitter or other successful companies or be prepared to go the way of IBM and loose your market.

    Pros

Please note that this review is specifically about the US division of Sonic Healthcare. If you work for the darling lab in Texas, you have a shot at making it. In any other location you could be offered up as a sacrifice to the gods of the bottom line with little or no notice. A lot of change means there may be opportunities for the right person, if you can stomach the politics. The company is a mess, so there are plenty of challenges to keep you engaged. Compensation is decent for some, but not for all employees. Some are grossly underpaid. The Australian management team seems decent, and they may have a long-term plan. They may be clueless about how badly the US management team continues to screw things up.

    Cons

Please note that this review is specifically about the US division of Sonic Healthcare. This is a company in transition, and they are handling it very poorly. Rampant downsizing, rumor-mongering, unwarranted persecution, unfounded accusations, and gross distortions of the truth, even outright lies, are normal. The sad part: This comes from the highest levels of management. You just can't trust what you're told. Upper level management seems determined to sabotage some labs. Certain divisions of the company are primed for destruction due to mismanagement by the US corporate group. Good people are driven out or fired. Political maneuvering is a necessity to make it. If the wrong people dislike you, you will not survive. You are encouraged and expected to participate in the persecution of those who are disliked. Morale is in the toilet in some locations. Good luck following company policy as an employee. If they have a written one, they sure don't follow it or share it with employees. HR is NOT your friend at this company. They do not have the pulse of the company. You will be lucky if you ever meet anyone in HR prior to the day you are kicked out the door.

    Advice to Management

To the Australian management: You need to realize that you still have poisonous snakes in key leadership positions in the US. If you don't root them out and get rid of them, the US division will continue to decline. Get a decent HR staff who can see the hostile work environment where it exists. Reign in or eliminate the people creating it. Put a stop to management retaliation against employees who don't agree with them. Management should not spread rumors about people who are let go, regardless of how much truth there is to them. (I suspect not much.) If you need to downsize, be honest with people about it. Don't lie to them. When you do tell them, either give them time to find something new or offer a reasonable severance.

    Pros

Quite literally, the only remotely positive thing about working for this company is that you may receive substandard compensation for the work that you do under their employ.

    Cons

This company has absolutely no consideration or respect for their employees. If you enjoy being low-balled at every turn, or being hired for a permanent position by a director who plans to eliminate your department in 3 months, then this company is highly recommended. Also, if you enjoy working for a director who is utterly oblivious to their responsibilities and what their department actually does, then this company is highly recommended. The only reason that you should even consider working here is if you have nowhere else to go.

    Advice to Management

Invest in your employees and you will continue to grow. Learn about what you do, and what the people who work for you do, or be willing to admit what you do not know. If you make a large business decision, such as removing a department, do not disrespect people's lives by leading them to believe something that is not true. Before you let someone go, make sure you will not be mistaken in doing so. Also, be certain that they are not someone you will attempt to hire again, days later.
