I have been working at Sonoma Partners full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Leadership that stays ahead of the competition and cares about employees. Definite emphasis on work life balance

    Cons

The size of the company requires employees to go outside of their comfort zone for certain tasks. This could actually be a pro for many people.

I worked at Sonoma Partners full-time

    Pros

Good benefits, lots of "perks" -- like fun company outings,
Work with great people who will deliver above & beyond the client's expectations.
Use the latest technology & stay ahead of the curve on development methodologies.
Learn development in a "boutique" environment which you can translate into a big pay bump when you move on.
Work from home 60% (with an asterisk)

    Cons

Hours are very long, but the only way to get a good bonus/raise/promotion is to out-work the Gen-Y "lifers" -- think 60 as a baseline to advance here, and 45 to be a minimal week.
Pay is on the low side
People with families can't really take advantage of the outings & perks. Great if you're 20-something and have no kids, not so much if you would rather spend time with your kids.
The "asterisk" on the work from home is really that you end up putting the time you would have saved on the commute into more billable hours. I work in an office 5 days a week now & my spouse says I am spending more time with the kids now than when I was home but locked in the office 10-12 hours.
You're not going to see much in the way of a raise or promotion here. I put the "Career opportunities" as a 3/5 simply because you'll learn so much here your next position is going to be a lot better pay and a lot more responsibility.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide some more clearly specified financial incentive for people working so many hours, instead of a nebulous promise of a bonus.
Give people more security. I always felt like if I didn't live up to impossibly high standards I was getting fired the next day. I only saw one person leave in the years I was there for performance, yet I always felt like I or one of my friends were next.

    Pros

Flexibility is hard to match. Overall benefits are top notch.
Company has invested in additional practice areas with the future in mind.

    Cons

It's consulting which can be stressful at times. Some clients are great but some are tough to deal with. It's not for everyone...

I have been working at Sonoma Partners

    Pros

nice offices, highly skilled team, unique projects, ability to quickly expand development expertise

    Cons

inner circle of tenured employees, despite advertising of flexible schedules employees are pressured to do the opposite, expect 25% less pay than comparable jobs and 25% more work (expect your $ earned per hour to free fall)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

sonoma partners could be 99% of what they are with 25-50% less job stress. the employees you hire are self motivated, talented, and don't need to be micromanaged.

I have been working at Sonoma Partners full-time

    Pros

There is a policy allowing you to work from home 3 days/week which is very nice. The company is setup to allow for remote work so there is less travel than a lot of other consulting firms. The people are very nice and the community in Chicago is great.

    Cons

Sonoma Partners has a "rule by fear" mentality. A lot of employees end up getting official warnings that will allow the management to fire you if you mess up anything. This causes people to be scared to make any mistake and a lot of the employees walk on eggshells. Additionally, there is very little room for movement in your career. Even though it's a small company, they are reluctant to give promotions. A few people left the company because the only way the could get a promotion was by moving jobs. Lastly, their pay/benefits are below market standards. You will not only take a pay cut to work here, but your pay will not increase at the same rate it will at other firms in the industry. The first two years you will only get 3 weeks of vacation/sick time combined which is not competitive with other firms.

    I worked at Sonoma Partners

    Pros

    1. Co-workers are bright, capable, and willing to help get the job done.
    2. Challenging, thought provoking projects to work on.
    3. Ability to participate in projects by wearing multiple hats.
    4. Clear focus on getting the job done in a practical, customer focused manner.
    5. Most work is done at the company offices and at home. Light travel when compared to competitors in consulting space.

    Cons

    1. Pay is average at best. Will likely be offered lower than average salary relative to competitors in consulting space. I found this especially true when comparing to what peers salaries/responsibilities were at other firms.
    2. Expect 45-50 hour weeks as a long term trend. Fairly standard in consulting, but the 40-45 is not correct.
    3. Review process is questionable. Received negative performance feedback while I had multiple clients try to hire me during or after engagement on said projects.
