I have been working at Sonoma Valley Hospital part-time

    Pros

Coworkers are warm and capable. Sonoma is a pleasant community in which to work. The medical-surgical unit, though small, is team-oriented and provides excellent patient care.

    Cons

Nurses work 12hr shifts and are only given one 1/2hr break per shift. 15min breaks are never given and, if a nurse were to ask for this, he or she would be reprimanded. Overtime is only paid if a nurse works over 40hr in a week which means if a nurse works for 16 or 20hr in one shift, he or she will still only be paid straight time if her cumulative weekly hours have not yet reached 40. Administration routinely praises their accomplishments in increasing the margin or bottom line, but rarely ever mentions or thanks the nursing staff. Nursing supervisors are paid hourly and when they take their break, they must not leave the premises and must continue to hold the supervisor's phone. Most of the medical staff is entrenched in the "Old Boy Network" with episodes of yelling or demeaning night nurses who call with a question continuing to occur too often. Even the newer/younger ED physicians/hospitalists/surgeons can routinely be very difficult to work with and disrespectful to nursing staff.

I have been working at Sonoma Valley Hospital full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Small town hospital where the feeling was that you were helping your neighbors and friends. The services were comparable to a larger hospital with a great ED and surgical team.

    Cons

Management changed based on the need for a new hospital then alienated the community and divided it. Employees were fired to make up for bad decisions and a culture of fear replaced the teamwork attitude. There are many good employees that were hired but basically will stay on until until they can find a better job elsewhere.

I have been working at Sonoma Valley Hospital part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Wonderful environment, caring employees, beautiful location, progressive management. It truly is a great place to work. The staff cares about each other. Management encourages growth and development.

    Cons

Usual politics. If you are new it seems like everyone knows each other. It takes time to make changes but even the doctors seem to be coming around to the 21st century.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the great work!
