Advice to Senior Management
Use your interns wisely and make the experience worth their time and yours
Pros
Work within music.
Casual Environment.
Always on top of what bands are buzzing.
Listen to a lot of music.
Get to work with up and coming artists.
If you're lucky, sometimes you can go to free shows.
Cons
unpaid internship.
Lack of duties for interns.
Pros
casual dress code
good location
friendly people
Cons
low pay, limited chance of promotion
Pros
You love the music business, you want to sell a "cool" product, you are a hipster / aspiring DJ
Cons
The political maneuvering needed to succeed is exhausting. Also, since the company is bleeding money everyone is scared for their jobs, so the middle managers refuse to let go of the reins on major projects. Tough to attribute quality work to yourself.
Advice to Senior Management
Buy radio stations!!!
Pros
Sony is a respected brand
Sony pursues innovation and excellence in it's products and services
Cons
Strategy du jour environment with frequent managment turn over leading to constantly changing focus and priorities.
Advice to Senior Management
Determine SonyBMG's strategy as part of Sony Corporations strategy, establish executive leadership based on that strategy and back them up throughout execution.
Pros
Salary, Benefits, Perks. Company supports cross department education
Cons
Long weekdays and weekends. Has difficulty changing with the times.
Advice to Senior Management
Make employees feel comfortable when taking vacation.
Pros
independent work environment. Ability to work with world class artist, talent managers, film, television and digital portals which allowed me to maintain relationships through out the years
Cons
Like all major companies, I had to deal with 3 major changes in management. When I first started, I worked for one individual... things are much different now
Advice to Senior Management
There are many employees there that may not have the "resume" that others you experiment with... invest in those that have invested in you
Pros
There are still a few departments that value dedication in employees and give recognition. The dress code is business casual so no need to spend a lot on fancy suits.
Cons
Job security has eroded for just about all departments. The mentality is increasingly become more about self preservation instead of valuing & supporting employees that go above & beyond. There are a few bosses that try to maintain positive morale but its getting harder as there are no incentives to give employees that work hard.
Pros
- Some nice perks such as free cd's, posters, discounts on Sony products, and ability to listen to music during work
- Your friends will be impressed
- Laid back atmosphere
Cons
- Pay is much less than similar job elsewhere
- Annual review process is a joke and not tied to your raise/bonus
- Zero training...you have to figure everything out on your own and there is no employee development
- Since so many of the company's jobs have been eliminated or outsourced, many employees are having to take on excess work
- Low morale
- Since it is so laid back, it is nearly impossible to get anything done
- Highly political atmosphere....if you are not part of the "in" crowd your career will go nowhere
- Too much talking about things and not enough doing
- Top heavy
- Silos prevent cross polliination of information and ideas
- Very difficult to get noticed unless you do something drastic
- The only way to make substantially more money is to leave and come back
Advice to Senior Management
Invest in your employees....tie raises and bonuses to performance, and put employee development plans in place. Figure out a way to encourage employees across the company to submit ideas.
