I worked at Sony Electronics full-time

    Pros

Employee exchange program that can allow you to explore working for Sony in other parts of the world
    Learning Japanese culture
In my team, we had a lot of room to choose our own technology
See what it takes to affect change in a incredibly large company
Great work life balance in America (not so good in Japan)
You meet a lot of different people

    Cons

Advancement doesn't seem to be based on technological merit or performance, but more on sticking to how Sony already does things
Management on both sides of the Pacific don't seem to be in sync most of the time

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reward people who are passionate and try to push forward to make Sony as good at software as it was at consumer electronics

    Pros

Once you are in, you have tons of opportunity. I have worked in multiple business areas and learned a ton. If you enjoy being able to learn different areas of the business, this is a great place to work.

    Cons

Due to restructuring, there has been a drop in morale. Employees need a boost.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at Sony Electronics full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Opportunities to work across different departments and divisions to expand career experience.

    Cons

Too much stringent oversight from Tokyo HQ impacts the speed and effectiveness of business allowed in the U.S.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reduce the number of model offerings to focus on profitable lines and utilize those profits to increase marketing efforts to raise brand awareness to US consumers. A significant % of consumers aren't aware that Sony offers exceptional mobile phones and tablets.

I worked at Sony Electronics part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Great employee benefits, discount, and an opportunity to see products as they came out.

    Cons

The store manager. The lack of self control and anger management issues is what precipitated a near 100% turnover rate in employees. He was eventually fired, but only shortly before Sony closed all of its outlets.

The pay. I earned the company over $500,000.00 in a given year, but Sony couldn't justify a raise beyond 2%. Considering I produced a minimum 40:1 return on investment as an employee (could be as high as 60:1 if I went back and checked my pay stub), they could have tripled my pay and still had a substantial return.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Re-open your outlets. You shot yourself in the foot when you closed stores that were near international destinations. You had plenty of hard working employees, and there is no doubt that many of your stores made you money. The decision to gut this part of your business makes about as much sense as cutting taxes to reduce deficit spending.

I have been working at Sony Electronics full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Sony still creates great products like 4K TVs, action cams, Alpha cameras, and home audio systems. The company also offers great amenities and tries hard to motivate employees by sponsoring employee events. Great employee discounts.

    Cons

Due to the layoffs and the way that they sacked the previous CEO, the majority of the employees have lost faith in the current CEO who has been in the company forever. He just doesn't have the charisma that the previous CEO had and he is basically HQ's puppet. Japan HQ is trying to control the US operations and more Japanese expats will take over management roles thus impeding local employees to get promoted. And unfortunately, Japan HQ is still struggling trying to figure out their own direction and strategy. Although the company is doing better, Sony overall is hurting and wouldn't be surprised if there are more layoffs. The HR department is also very weak and unfortunately don't really care about employees but more about the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management needs to be more transparent to their own employees and not just focus on making top management happy. Unfortunately they hurt and affected so many people with their layoffs that is hard to love and trust the company like before.
