    No opinion of CEO

I worked at Sony Electronics part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Different products to work with to sell. If you are knowledgable in many sections job will be much easier, such as cameras, televisions, computers. Base pay is ok.

    Cons

Very difficult to work with commission, you only get commission from extended warranty sales, which are very hard to sell. Working in specific sections can make it even harder to get commission. Average sales employee in my opinion has no future.

    Pros

Some great people, with potential for providing strong contribution. History of strong technology; still some important patents. Decent pay and good benefits. Potential for important synergies between Sony pictures, Sony music, Playstation, Consumer electronics and professional electronics -- no competitors have that.

    Cons

Weak management with frequent turnover. No accountability. Constant re-shuffling of leadership in Japan means nobody has the incentive to take business risks and "own" important new initiatives. US management has been reduced to beancounters and apologists. True product management, strategic planning and R&D have all been decimated.

    Advice to Management

Take a page out of your competitor's playbook -- like Apple, Samsung, Nest, Sonos; hire innovative engineers and product planners in Silicon Valley to leverage latest trends. Commit to a new business initiative (like medical, networked home or digital cinema) and hire expert leaders to build the best team.

    Pros

Location is good which is in Silicon valley

    Cons

Except the pros: low salary, not good management etc

I have been working at Sony Electronics full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I'm not sure there are any.

    Cons

Upper management is still pursuing a 1980s-style manufacturing/industrial strategy. They don't realize the world has moved on and they can't figure out why no on wants to buy want they're selling. As long as this mindset persists, Sony will continue to decline in the face of competition from Apple, Samsung, etc.

    Advice to Management

    Retire.

I worked at Sony Electronics full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great benefits, good people to work with. A long history of engineering and product excellence. World top five brand leader.

    Cons

The company is doing drastic cost cutting to stay afloat, and is not able to pursue innovative new products because of financial issues.

    Advice to Management

Focus on new products and innovation, not selling assets - getting rid of your best people will lead to implosion even faster.

I have been working at Sony Electronics full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Some really cool technology and lots of untapped potential. Most co-workers are very passionate and capable, if not shell-shocked from round after round of layoffs. A good place if you're really into office politics.

    Cons

Few, if any, of the executives are true leaders. The current path seems to indicate the company will become irrelevant -- there appears to be no real strategy whatsoever other than laying off more and more people. Colleagues in Japan are in no way aligned with local realities; duplicate and contrary efforts abound.

    Advice to Management

Try to explain why it's not hopeless, but don't sugarcoat the truth -- you do yourselves a disservice.

I have been working at Sony Electronics full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Benefits are decent. The building is conveniently located next to the San Jose airport.

    Cons

Rank/file employee turnover at this business unit is incredibly high. Specifically, turnover is at least 4-5 times higher than most Silicon Valley companies. As a result, this business unit is "always hiring." In contrast, no one in senior management has left this business unit in the past 10 years. HR is aware of some (but probably not all) of the problems that exist in this business unit. However, unlike an American company, HR is powerless to do anything.

    Advice to Management

Phil Molyneaux: You are in charge or US operations. Why is the employee turnover at this business unit so high? What are the complaints from former Sony Alumni, regarding this business unit? (There are a lot of US Research Center alumni out there.) Please find out. The best course of action is to disband the business unit, and to form a new one, with a brand new senior management team.
