I worked at Sony PlayStation as a contractor (more than 3 years)

    Pros

New big titles free, like Uncharted 3, fun atmosphere most of the time. Cheap soda machine and free K-cup coffee.

    Cons

1 perm tester for every 15+ temps. Harsh hiring transition process that often translates more into who you know and likes you as opposed to how well you work. Often, but not always, have supervisors who show up late and clearly were never good at even your job. Work is fluctuating highly, often only 6 months of the year of high work load, rest of the year maybe half the available temps are used.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Better review overtime listings for permanents on weekends, as often there were as many or more perms then temps and they often had 2-3 hour of work a day between them. Only 1 would put in a half days work, others would just be there to collect OT. In San Diego well below desired income, most employees lived with parents or a large number of room mates.

Mostly incompetent leadership at the C level and manager level.

I worked at Sony PlayStation as a contractor (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Discount on games and console hardware. That's it.

    Cons

Lack of competency at C level and manager level. Departments are silos with managers protecting their own turfs at the expense of the whole company. Company culture is one of "I don't know what you are doing and I don't care as long as my project goes forward." Best talents leave and incompetents stay behind and walk the halls like dinosaurs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be honest with candidates at the job interviews. Don't paint a rosy picture just to get people in the door.

As an animator, don't count on steady work, but it's a good short term opportunity

I worked at Sony PlayStation as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

You get the chance to contribute to AAA Titles
Overall, the culture is a fun one and people get along.
Animation supervisors seem to distribute work in a pretty fair way.

    Cons

There is consistent overtime for artists.
They tend to lay people off when projects are finished.
There is overtime pay, but no profit sharing or bonuses for contractors.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Almost all artists are contractors. I feel like you could redesign this to give a greater percentage of them the peace of mind of a staff position.

I have been working at Sony PlayStation as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

Friendly, welcoming, fun people. Great atmosphere and a nice location in sunny San Diego. The San Diego campus works with some great companies and on some really cool IPs.

    Cons

75% of the jobs are contract positions, with little to no job security once the project ends, and it doesn't look like that is changing any time soon. The people at the top seem out of touch with everyone else. Since most positions are contract, there is not much room for growth of career.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider bringing on more full-timers rather than so many contract positions.

I worked at Sony PlayStation as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

Good co-workers, responsive support staff, thorough benefits, and no shortage of resources at one's disposal (provided management can be convinced of an idea's validity).

    Cons

Sporadic work hours, inconsistent passion / motivation levels amongst employees, a general sense of money being much more important than corporate reputation or product quality

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop letting passionate workers leave for other companies. It seemed to be happening a lot whilst employed there.

    Pros

Fun work enviroment, decent hours and pay.

    Cons

They will keep you as a temp for many years so they won't have to give you benefits.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Better benefits and perks for employees. Everyone feels pretty expendable.

    Pros

If you like working with Playstation titles and/or on Playstation tech, this is the place to be.

    Cons

It is a very large company, and it can be easy to feel like you've been lost in the crowd.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn to value your new talent's perspective. It can be a breath of fresh air.

I have been working at Sony PlayStation full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

    Great benefits
    Strong tradition
    Stability in a fluid industry

    Cons

The dichotomy of purpose - serve the platform/serve the games, permeates all aspects of the business.
The uber-traditional hierarchal structure impedes the innovation and growth they so crave.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Flatten out; allow managers, senior managers, and directors to make decisions appropriate decisions without escalating all the way to the top. If you can't trust your leadership, address that; let your creative minds breathe in all groups.

    Pros

Great environment and people, and very competitive pay. Decent Sony discounts as well.

    Cons

They mostly hire contractors for a project, and just let them go with a vague promise of calling them back when a new project gets started. They also don't directly offer benefits, but you can get a plan through the contracting agency.
