    Pros

A full-time job in journalism; 401k matching recently reinstated. They generally hire quality people concencerned about creating quality products, however keeping them has been tough.

    Cons

Salary freeze now in at least its fourth year. Compensation is poor, moral is low. Organization is top heavy and the workers are frustrated and angry.

    Advice to Management

    Pros

    They keep American Banker alive.

    Cons

    All their other publications suck.

    Advice to Management

Go back in time to 2000. Fire smug top execs who could not see the future of publishing and the opportunities of social media and service to audiences. Treat reporters better. Give them the tools they need to succeed and promotion opportunities. Update your websites with a professional user experience designer, so your audiences can get the information they need. Survey your employees to find out what they think about the company and their jobs. Act as if you care.

    Pros

Great people working really hard to produce great products, in the midst of a transition.

    Cons

Morale is at an all time low due to no communication from upper mgmt about the future of SM, shrinking depts and No salary increases or small perks (like working from home during a snow storm)

    Advice to Management

Communicate not just amongst yourselves, but across all levels.

    Pros

Pros can depend on the department/group you are in. For me personally: wonderful colleagues and mentors, comfortable and casual work environment, decent vacation time, career advancement (until I got laid off).

    Cons

Salary freeze should have defrosted by now, but hasn't. No 401k match and high insurance deductibles. A lot of ego and pluming of feathers from upper management. Rash decisions to show "cost savings", and so quality employees become dispensable. A lack of communication and understanding of roles between departments. The office is old, dusty, filthy.... be prepared to sneeze.

    Pros

I was able to achieve a great work-life balance. The hours were reasonable compared to a lot of journalism jobs.

    Cons

The PE firm that owned the company did not invest much in it. Lack of resources always seemed to be an issue, as did lack of vision from the editorial department leadership. Because of this, the company always seems to lag the rest of the industry. A lot of turnover too--people usually leave for more prestigious places.

    Pros

The VIEW on the 27th floor was amazing, reasonable time off, good part of town, decent office staffers, well kept building.

    Cons

Management made some pretty weird decisions. Most folks in the office that were left by the time I left were already looking to leave. Seems like digital publishing isn't as profitable in practice as they thought it would be.

    Advice to Management

    Listen to your department team.

    Pros

big company, big resources, traditional publishing house but great people that are dedicated

    Cons

larger companies generally tend to have a pit where one can fall into as it is so big, and this is a vey traditional group

    Advice to Management

try to expand out of the singular vertical one is charged with; finding places to source help and or revenue lines that aren't traditional
