Expected to do a lot for less than market pay. Can be very stressful!

I have been working at South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Coworkers are pretty nice and easy to work with. Have opportunities to work with other technologies, not just mainframe.

    Cons

Lower than market pay rate. Have to pick up slack for others who do not do their work. Projects that need to be done yesterday. Too few employees for the work that needs to be done.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find a way to pay market value for positions and hire enough people to do the work.

I have been working at South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce

    Pros

-Can learn a lot from contractors
    -Had a good manager
    -Friendly people
Great place to learn but not to stay for long.

    Cons

-Contractors made a lot more than everyone else and everyone knew it. So everyone's attitude was to let them do all the work. This clearly demotivated employees. Employees are lied to about getting raises. When asked about the raises there was no accountability.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to employees. A lot of money is being wasted on contractors. Give employees raises. Stop telling employees they are getting raises when you know they're not.

    Pros

    Reported to a great manager.

    Cons

Crazy leadership, didn't know if they were coming or going (toward the end).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It's government, expect the lazies and crazies.

    Pros

You receive 7.5 hours of annual and sick days monthly. All hours roll over yearly if not used yearly. There is a lot of holidays. It's is M-F no weekends.

    Cons

Constantly laying off. They do not value employees. Terrible pay and decent benefits. Work space and equipment is outdated. Employees have bad morale about their work. No one "enjoys" SCDEW.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop promoting the employees that will not crack down on worthless employees. Boost morale. Give people something to look forward to.

I have been working at South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

    - People are nice.
    - If you can get in on a contract, you will make great money.
    - Casual dress policy
    - There is a clear vision for IT workers

    Cons

    - Some coworkers are clearly demotivated, waiting till retirement
    - Management is pretty inept at leading. Lots of edicts without any inkling of getting consensus first.
    - Not enough work for everyone all the time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

From a contractor's (and taxpayer's) perspective, it is clear that a lot of money is being wasted on contractors. Some contractors are making 4 times as much as salaried employees. Bump up the salaried employees, bring in some good talent, and quit throwing away money training contractors that take the environment knowledge with them. Also, morale was pretty low--involve employees more in the decision-making process. Give them more ownership and stop with the edicts and decisions "from on high".
