I have been working at South Coast Lumber Co.
Pros – The compensation is the best you'll find along the Northern California & Southern Oregon coast for truck drivers. Most equipment is newer and kept in great condition. Supervisors are nice and appreciate a job well done. There is no pressure to run illegally and safety is promoted strongly from the supervisors down to your co-workers. Highway drivers are put in hotels if an overnight stay is required. The company also employs someone full time to keep equipment clean, which is always nice. Most importantly, in the up and down lumber market, the owner of the company and the people working under him do an amazing job at keeping their employees working steadily, even during tough economic times.
Cons – The company has gotten big enough where the attention to detail is fading. Many employees abuse the time clock and go unpunished. The focus on seniority works against the company when many of the top drivers feel like they can't be punished for their actions. Several employees are "bad eggs" and come to work with poor attitudes. The company's money is wasted time and time again in many different areas. The lack of vision coverage in the benefits package should be addressed.
Advice to Senior Management – Replace the bad employees. It might be tough, but it will pay off over time. Also, look for ways to expand. If something is making profit, why let outside companies do the work for us?
