I worked at South College-Asheville full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Loved the people I worked with. Caring teachers and peers.

    Cons

New Dean is a nightmare, micromanager with no leadership skills. She will tell you one thing and doing something else behind your back.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Avoid this new dean at all cost. She is extremely dangerous and dishonest.

I have been working at South College-Asheville full-time

    Pros

There was a paltry paycheck every two weeks. Aside from that, there is nothing positive about my experience at South College-Asheville. Have I reached 20 words yet? I learned the value of the community college system.

    Cons

There are so many negatives about this "institution" I don't even know where to start. The best place to start is the culture of the organization. South College promotes a bullying and belittling atmosphere. This starts at the top of the business at the Knoxville headquarters. This translates into very poor treatment of staff members, teachers and finally students. The new executive director of the school is the 24 year son of the owner.

The heads of the "academic" and sales departments from Knoxville are just downright terrible people. The sales vice president enjoys sexually harassing the younger blonder sales staff and there is a huge turnover in the "admissions" department. The sales vice president also pressures the admissions department to recruit any breathing potential student no matter their ability to succeed in their academic program. The main goal of the admissions department is to recruit as many people as possible to be able to get the federal money associated with a student. There is specific targeting of military veterans with post 9/11 benefits to be able to get as much of their benefits out of them as possilbe.

South College-Asheville also offers "institutional loans" that is fake money from a lending agency to the college. The money never is transferred from a bank to South College, but the students are responsible for paying these back. The fact that it costs over $6000 a quarter to attend creates this type of false money because no undergraduate student loans and grants will ever pay $25,0000 annually.

On the academic side, I would not reccomend any of the programs to anyone. The bullying culture is celebrated within several of the academic programs offered and there appears almost to be a contest to see which program loses the most students - whether it be the Physical Therapist Assistant, RN or Radiology programs. Students who have served in the military even drop out saying that they were not as abused in basic training.

Every quarter there is an incident regarding the safety of students and employees where the Asheville Police Department has to be called to escort a student from the building.

As for benefits. If you are hired as a staff member you do not get a vacation in your first year of employment. Most staff members do not last a full year due to the fact that the turnover averages at least 1 person per month. The full time employment profile of the institution including faculty and staff is between 40 and 45 people. Then you get two weeks a year for the rest of your career. There is some type of sick day policy, but you can't get sick. There is a 401k plan that you are forcibly enrolled in and you have to pay $50 a year to maintain it. South College also offers an incredibly bad and expensive health insurance plan. It does not cover much and appears to have an $8,000 out of pocket expense before it covers anything beyond routine care.

If you are interested in helping students, creating critical thinkers and better practicioners of professions, do not work for South Colllege. I am saddened every day thinking of the amount of money this business steals from the federal government & poor students. I also am saddened that the academic atmosphere in Asheville is so poor that the few high quality employees of South College get stuck there for extended periods. When a longer term employee got a new job - there was almost a celebration that they had escaped jail.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Go out of business and stop stealing from taxpayers.

    I worked at South College-Asheville

    Pros

Good spot to get some experience. It is nice to see the student success stories. I really don't believe there are any more.

    Cons

    - Leadership on site is laughable
    - Leadership off site (headquarters in Knoxville) doesn't even take the time to get insight into what is going on (knee-jerk reactions that impact EVERYTHING!)
    - Performance conversations are non-existant. Furthermore, there is no focus on personal development.
    - The idea of a cohesive 'team' has never even crossed anyone's mind! Clear division between departments and especially between Faculty and Staff
    - Low pay, benefits are appalling, no pride in working there...
    - It is a miracle that the school is still around... it has literally just edged by year after year in a number of areas (accreditation, retention and placement rates, etc). The technology used internally is worthless.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop embarrassing yourself. Stop focusing ONLY on money... try caring about academics and your employees. The school as it exists now is a joke.

I have been working at South College-Asheville full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Nice new building. Some parts of it anyways.

    Cons

    Low Pay.
Clear division between faculty and staff. Staff are treated as if they do not matter.
Admissions will do whatever it takes to get students in and enrolled, regardless of students ability to afford the program.
Headquartered in Knoxville, who is clueless about the Asheville area and student base.
No pride in working there. Makes being pleasant around students difficult.
Very few students actually finish their degrees here.
If a student happens to finish their degree, they typically have over $40,000 in student loans plus private loans. Students who do not finish still end up with lots of loans and no degree. The default rate on the federal loans are quite high.
Those who do not finish their degree will have a hard time getting their classes to transfer to any other college.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management, realize your faculty, staff, and students are people, not just numbers
