I worked at South Dakota State

    Pros

I enjoyed working at South Dakota State University while I was a student in attendance. The balance between work and school was strived after and met with satisfaction.

    Cons

As a very well-established institution, I felt that there was a certain lack of structure that lent itself to miscommunication or lack of communication that made the job, at times, more difficult to accomplish.

    Pros

Allowed to wear headphones, being alone for the majority of the shift

    Cons

Understaffed, unreasonable supervisors, disrespect from other departments, unusual hours, hire leads and supervisors without considering current employees

    Cons

    Lack of training.
Hierarchy is clearly established and lower level employees are treated like personal assistants

Lead and empower employees and give them the tools to succeed.

I have been working at South Dakota State full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Brookings a nice small town, schools are good and community is small. If you like small town then it is a good choice.

    Cons

if SDSU is your job destination then welcome to hell! They discriminate new faculty for their race. Administration speaks one language of idealism when trying to capture students but when it comes to teaching, it doesn't even provide basics. Highly understaffed, Senior faculty bullies juniors to the extent that they yell at them, insults them and administration stands with seniors.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Advice to President of SDSU. Remove politics from following divisions:
    1. Chemistry division
    2. IT and Support
    3. Human Resources
    5. Racial discrimination from the campus.
    6. Bullying of junior and new faculties by senior faculties. this has made a hell of our campus.

I worked at South Dakota State part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Safe and cool environment for research work. Professors are helpful. Student can choose their subjects according as their interest and does not matter what their previous background.

    Cons

University is too expensive compared to assistantship. Students need to cover their fees, insurance and acomodations themselves. Full Assistantship is too low. And Most of the students get half paid assistantship, no matters how much they work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to reduce the course fee.

I worked at South Dakota State full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Not a challenging environment, so jobs are relatively easy competed to other higher ed settings. People are nice.

    Cons

Not an intellectual environment. Zero diversity. The few people of color on campus are international. Many years behind in terms of technology. Extremely resistant to change. Average school, but behave as though they are Ivy League. Whoever sticks around the longest gets promoted.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be open to change! Utilize technology to your advantage. Hire the best, rather than people who will fit in to the existing environment and will never challenge the current structure.
